Advantages: Great selection for bigger babes!!

Disadvantages: Not high enough a limit om my store card,<tongue in cheek>!!!

While I was searching for this category I came across the names of many other clothes shops and discovered something quite interesting. Wanna know more? Read on!

Out of all the clothes stores listed, and there are quite a few, Evans has had over 26 opinions written about it (mine is the 27th!). Long Tall Sally has just 3, Principles has 5; Miss Selfridges (sigh, gone are my shopping days there!) has 9. Evans is only topped by one or two others, among which are M&S (no real surprises there then) and Top Shop with 32. Incidentally the latter is part of the Arcadia chain too, along with Evans and Debenhams.

I think that just proves what a lot of people already know, that the average British female is not a stick insect, in fact she averages out at a size 16, or above! Interesting, eh? And the amount of opinions on this store just goes to show that it is pretty popular one too!

I am not saying that I have read all the opinions on it, so there maybe one or two that don’t rate it all that highly, but they obviously have had some contact with the store and felt the need to inform, as indeed do I.

So, fasten your seatbelts, and prepare to sit out yet another one of Scatty’s ops on what I hope will be a very interesting, helpful and sometimes amusing one, as is my wont!

Once upon a time, (no don’t worry this isn’t going to be a fairy story!) if you went clothes shopping at this store when you purchased your goods they were always put into a huge carrier bag with “Evans” stamped on the outside for all to see. See back then Evans was known as “the outsize store” so everyone knew where you had been to do your clothes shopping! My how things have changed since then, and thank goodness for that!

I really do not remember how many years Evans stores have been around, all I can say is that my Great Aunt used to do her shopping at her local one in Hampshire and that was when I was
much younger, and considerably smaller!! Ho ho!! That was in the days when if you were slightly larger than the ‘average’ size, the only real item of clothing open to you was the tent..nay the marquee! Oh how things have changed and thank…..!!

I have been shopping at my local Evans store for quite some time now and I am always pleasantly surprised at the selection of clothes they carry. Here, just because we are ‘big babes’ doesn’t mean we want to walk around in shapeless, unflattering garments; we too want to be ‘dedicated followers of fashion’! Ok well not quite then, even I would draw the line at those triangle bits of material with the strings at the back that were the ‘in’ thing last year! I mean how the hell do they keep them up??

Evans ‘label’ is ‘Essence’, and this is the tag that you will find in most of their clothes, and even the carrier bags only have a big letter E on them! They also carry a petites range for lasses under 5’ 3”, as well as the ‘Seven’ collection, for younger big babes. This year that selection carries a lot of army style camouflaged tops and cargo pants. As well as that collection there is also the “East Coast” one. I am not all that sure where that comes from but there are plenty of casual garments as well as more dressier stuff.

Prices are very good too, ranging from about £20 for a skirt, and with tops starting as little as £7 sometimes. But that is just an example; you do really have to check it out for yourself. It is decent quality too and will not shrink in the wash. I don’t ever tumble dry my stuff though; I prefer to hang it out. I find items keep their shape better this way. But then I think that it’s the way with some clothes you can buy these days?

All of Evans clothing goes from a size 14 (in the Petites range) 16 up to size 32, so you don’t even have
to be a big big babe to shop there? Dawn French and Helen Teague also design and make some clothing for Evans that goes under the title of, 1647, meaning that 47% of British women are size 16 and over!! I haven’t actually bought any stuff from this range as I find it a bit out of my price range. It isn’t what I would class as ‘obscenely’ expensive but as I am a ‘ 3 for the price of 2 t-shirts gal’ you can see why I have not succumbed to the 1647 range yet!

One of the best bits of going shopping in Evans for me are the gorgeous bras they have! In ALL sizes! I don’t know about my fellow BB’s but I am heartily sick and tired of having to wear something that looks like it is designed to hold a small third world country in it and be expected to feel sexy at the same time..pah!

Well my fellow BB’s may I suggest you go take a look at your local Evans (or get hold of a copy of their great catalogue) next time you get a chance? I have become the proud owner of a delicate lilac and pink flowery bra, a black lacy one, and a gorgeous to die for leopard print number! Well hello boys!! Judy Finnigan…eat your heart out. And they have matching knickers too, and not all Bridget Jones Big Pants I might add!

The only thing I have been a tad disappointed at this year is the jewellery selection in store. It seems to be all sparkly and chunky fake silver stuff, but that is just a personal thing, and I can always use my Evans card (oh why oh why did I ever agree to that!!!!) to go jewellery shopping in Top Shop and Dorothy Perkins. I love junk jewellery, power beads and more power beads and the like and the Evans card is valid in these stores too. Thank goodness I got that darned card! :0)

Evans is also available to buy on-line, www.evans.ltd.uk. I have used this service on more than one occasion and cannot fault them. All times I have had my items deliveries within 3 days and returns can be
taken back to your local shop or posted back, whichever is more convenient to you. Returns in store are no problems whatsoever either, as long as you have got you receipt and the usual things.

One thing I would like to mention too, before I depart, is that it is such a delight to go shopping in one of these stores, most of the time the assistants are not ‘waif’ like super models themselves.

They are not skinny little things that are barely out of nappies (no disrespect here to any young lasses who are slender and work in clothes stores..) but they are happy and helpful (on more than one occasion an assistant has told me that she has bought the same item as the one she is in the process of wrapping for me and that she is very happy with it) And, sometimes they are Big Babes, ‘like what I am‘ and….thank goodness for that!!
Kazzie!!

Brilliant op - sums up my feelings exactly. Our local branch falls down in (strapless!) bra dept, plenty of ritzy big numbers, no so many day to day functions!

great op! I'm a size 16 (but I'm 6ft with it!) THe only thing that puts me off is the fact that the assistants in my local store are mostly under size 14s! - and thats a bit off putting! :-(

Do you mean I could be called Petite in Evans as a size 14?

That's does it for me! I wanna be labeled Petite ;{}

Lovely op, Lamorna
