Just what bargains can you find in Filene's basement?

I visited Boston last year and the original Filene's store and the "Basement". Recommended in verery travel guide going - Filiene is a Boston institution.

The concept of Filene's is a simple one- once an item gets into her Basement - the price comes down and down until someone save the unfortunate clothing for a few dollars.

The concept is not so original anymore - and specialist discount stores such as TJ Maxx, Marshalls and in some states "Ross - Dress for less" mimic or even originate the idea of designer gear for rock bottom prices.

The truth is that some gear is from designers you have never heard of - and some doesn't seem to be at basement prices when it first arrives. BUT do not let that stop you. There are many bargains to be had, and much gear from the requisite American designers. This is fun shopping - because in exchange for a jumble sale style rummage you can find some absolute bargains.

I challenge any first time visitor to one of this store to not spend over an hour rummaging thru the racks of merchandise and to come out having bought some item for low low price that you boast about to at least 3 people.

I also find the sheer ludicrous style of some items that end up in the basement a souce of never ending amusement. I guess I am staid, but 2 foot wide baby pink dungarees with sequins for men pushes my clothing self-confidence too far. But they were only $5.

The above review was written about the original Boston Department store's basesment. There is now a chain of these "basement" stores - which seem to lose something in their standalone nature.

In summary, if you are prepared to rummage - there are some bargains to be had and a few laughs.
