Advantages: CHEAP!
Disadvantages: Locations and Portfolio of products
Fopp used to be an independent store which specialises in selling cd's, dvd's and books, within the past 1/2 years they have been bought out by HMV after all Fopp stores had to shut due to costs, only 8 now remain open around the UK, they all still run under the name of Fopp however.
Fopp is well known for the price that it sells of it's dvd's, most for as little as £2 or £3 for very well known and respected films, it also sells books and cd's also for very cheap, the stores that I have visited are not very big, the one in Bristol is 2 stories but with little floor space, not like the curret Head/HMV's, however this doesn't usually take away from the selection they keep, perhaps the CD's they keep are less than perhaps the larger known stores.
I was able to purchase 4 high quality, fairly old films that a very well known, Usual Suspects, Seven (which is £10+ in most stores), A Beautiful Mind and High Fidelty, the lot combined for £12, thats £3 each, the Usual suspects film was also the collectors edition. I'm not sure how they can sell their dvd's so cheap, perhaps they're the unwanted stock from HMV, one thing I have noticed is that Fopp usually sell the standard, basic dvd's, with little or no special features and no 2 disc sets (other than The Usual Suspects).
The price is the big plus with Fopp, they do not have the catalogue of products that HMV do but they're much cheaper, as I mentioned, Zavvi/Head sell Seven at over £10, I also bought The Machinist starring Christian Bale for just £2, thats 5 top top quality brilliant, old and well known films for £15, much better than the 3 for £20 or 4 for £20 that most offers are these days.
Unfortunatly, there are only 8 stores left in the UK, a couple in
Glasgow, one in Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham, London, Cambridge and Edinburgh, which means most people won't have access to a store and they do not do online stores, probably because they sell items so cheap as it is it wouldn't work out financially.
Overall, I think Fopp is brilliant, they always have the DVD's i'm looking for at a very cheap price, unortunatly it's more of a walk than it is to Head, HMV or CEX which means I usually end up paying more for the less of a walk, everytime I go near it though I end up with some bargains and usually save buying dvd's I really want till I go to Fopp.
Great store if you are near one.
Summary: Cheap...
