Advantages: Eclectic film and music heaven
Disadvantages: Not the widest Choice
Fopp was an independent chain of shops selling music, dvd's and books to discerning consumers. Unfortunately towards the beginning of the Credit Crunch, the business began struggling and shut.
Thankfully HMV stepped in and bought the chain, however they haven't HMV'ed it they've allowed it to maintain its eclectic nature and independence and still thrive.
My review is of the Fopp store in London based on Earlham Street, its in a great spot on the cusp of Covent Garden, Charing Cross Road and Leicester Square.
The store is set over three levels, in the basement it is mainly DVD's, the main floor is the latest DVD's, Books and music, whilst the top floor is mainly music.
The store prides itself on selling slightly quirky items and it does it brilliantly. I always spend at least 30 minutes in here as there are so many awesome items, from French Cinema sections to Blue Note Jazz Cd sections.
On my last visit I bought a Serge Gainsbourg Autobiography for £2 a Werner Herzog 2 disc DVD documentary of the Antarctic and the Harold and Maude DVD for £4 and a Japanese Iron Man T-Shirt for a tenner.
I find the staff good value because they clearly enjoy their jobs and know a lot about what they sell, the prices are competitive unless you want to buy the latest releases which are slightly overpriced, but for me this shop is all about the obscure, the weird and wonderful and the eclectically cool.
The store is well worth checking out, for so many reasons, the main level has a great selection of DVD's and you'll always find things you forgot you loved or new and exciting things, however if you are looking for something in particular there is every chance you won't find it as I originally went in with a list of planned purchases and didn't find any.
To be honest, this isn't an HMV where you'll find anything between A-Z in big listed sections, it is the kind of shop which you'll love if you like music, film or books, as you'll lose yourself in weird and wonderful selections at pretty good prices.
There are Stores in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Nottingham, Manchester, Cambridge and Bristol to check out if this is your bag.
