Advantages: cheap, good way of rercycling
Disadvantages: not always what you want in shop
Charity shops are excellent, a good way of recycling things reusing things that are of no use to their first owner anymore. They are an excellent way of raising money for charity. There are many different charities that have shops age concern, save the children, Oxfam to name a few. Volunteers staff charity shops and the general public gives the goods to them as donations. Charity shops often sell their own Christmas cards. Some charity shops are better than others cleaner and just generally nicer. The charity shops that stock the better clothing are usually in a good area where people can afford to buy designer clothes and throw them away the next season. Just recently I have taken to shopping in Charity shops there are two in the small town I live in and 3 in the town I work in. I have not been shopping for me but my Grandson Adrian. Baby clothes are worn for such a short time they do not get worn out by first owner. I have bought several dungarees and shorts for between 50p and £1. I have bought some size 3 wellies in perfect condition for 50p. I have bought several easy peg puzzles for 50p and 70p. A huge sack of mega blocks, can?t remember how much that cost me. A big bag of wooden bricks for £2. I have bought other bits and pieces too. When I get the toys home I wash them, soak them in Milton sterilizing fluid and hope that kills all the germs. I have also bought some children?s books there some 10p some 50p all seem in good condition. The Charity shops I go to also sell adult clothes they are rarely so attractive tattier and not the right style or size but sometimes something good may turn up. I have bought plates and bowls from charity shops before as a plate to stand a plant on. When Sleepydormouse started university I bought some dinner plates for her from the charity shop miltoned them (just in case) but they looked perfect nearly new about 10 p each I think Ok so there
is some tat in some of the shops but often a gem turns up. It?s good for the environment, good for my pocket, and good way of helping the needy. Thanks for reading best wishes Mary

- 17/09/07 I used to love one in Stirling because it had a huge books section, Ive never found another one so good since I left, Harrogate had a distinct lack of good ones, they all just sold the charity 'brands' which for some reason are quite expensive. Bolton on the other hand has loads but none I like, although I rarely walk past just in case. |

- 01/11/03 Most people have this image of charity shops being all ragged clothes and broken items, its good to see an opo which shows the good side of them.
I personally do a lot of my shopping in these shops as you can get some great bargins and also you can find books or videos that may be out of print in high street shops.
Great op.
