If you live in the Islington area, then Diva on Upper Street might appeal to you. This shop is part of a chain; there are other branches in Camden Town and Richmond. However I like the Islington branch best. It is the largest Diva outlet that I know of and its low white ceiling with exotic lampshades and mobiles always make me feel like I am walking into Aladdin’s cave when I enter the shop.

The front of the shop is used to display a huge selection of cards for all occasions. If I have a birthday or other anniversary card to buy then I always come here. I don’t want an anonymous, sickly sweet card with a soppy verse inside. I want something that suits the person and the vast choice here means that I have never gone away empty handed, although some of the more unusual cards are not cheap.

Other items stocked include candles, household ornaments and lighting, jewellery, cosmetics, pens and writing paper and a few clothing items. The more expensive jewellery that is locked in the cabinet at the back is particularly to my taste, but I guess that I shall have to find someone to treat me to it. The prices of goods in stock will suit every pocket as they range from a few pounds to three figures.

The staff have always been very helpful and friendly to me, I have had once had to return a bracelet when the catch broke a few days after purchase and my money was returned immediately. The shop can be busy and you may have to queue on a weekend as the whole Upper Street area is always filled with shoppers and tourists.

This shop is ideal if you are on the lookout for a slightly offbeat gift, you don’t necessarily have to spend a lot to find something. That goes if you are treating yourself to something too and I rarely enter this shop without buying something. The good thing is that you don’t have to cane your credit card and go away feeling naughty.
