Advantages: lots of stock

Disadvantages: some is cheaper online

In my opinion, HMV is the best shop for all music and DVD purchases. Our local shop is a huge building, with two levels full of products.

The products they sell can be broken into a number of categories:

1) Music - all chart CDs, singles and albums, can be found here, but a vast back catalogue organised by artist and genre can also be perused. Prices are competitive on the more recent releases. but older material is a little more costly and can be found cheaper online.

2) DVDs - as with the music, all recent releases are available, as well as thousands of older releases organised in alphabetical order. There is a good selection of TV and movie box-sets, but again these aren't as well priced (in general) as online companies such as www.play.com.

3) Books - the book selection, though small, is always worth checking at HMV, as they have titles that are very 'young and trendy' - gangster books, autobiographies of celebrities, and the occasional oddity can all be found at bargain prices. I am always interested in the books as they are often cheaper than online, and I just wish they had a bigger selection to choose from.

4) T Shirts - despite only being a small part of the store, there are some very nice, trendy t-shirts available, in a wide range of sizes. Priced at around £10 each, they're no cheaper online, and you have the benefit of actually seeing them in store.

5) Finally, HMV sells vinyl records for DJs, complete with a Technics 1210 to listen to tunes on. I don't know if this is the same around the country, but when I used to DJ it was an invaluable resource.

In conclusion, HMV offers good prices on new releases, but you can often get better prices online for older releases. Customer service is good, as I've had to take a few things back every now and again, and there have been no complaints.

Summary: my fav shop for CDs and DVDs

Nice review, HMV is good, but annoyingly their website is not run by the same company, so if you see something online you can't get it in store for the same price!
