Advantages: Large selection, Found in most Cities

Disadvantages: Can be pricey.

HMV is the highstreet's leading retailer of Music, Film and Games and is also big in Canada, Ireland, Hong Kong and Singapore. The company (HMV group) also owns Waterstones. I think HMV has survived incredibly well considering the music and entertainment industry has faced such fierce competition from online retailers such as amazon and play.com. Although HMV is relatively expensive, it certainly isn't ridiculous in my opinion, and I have on occasions seen products cheaper in HMV than on Amazon. They also do offers now and again, as well as cheaper bargain priced DVDs.

My local HMV store is on the highstreet in Newport, but I have visited several other branches, including recently the large store on Oxford Street in London. I find that in general the stores are well laid out and easy to navigate, with chart CDs being easily spotted with special headers and DVDs generally being classed according to their type (Comedy, Feature Films etc).

The one thing that I must complain about is finding CDs, I'm unsure it it's just me but I can never seem to find the CD I'm looking for because they aren't really in alphabetical order, they just generally are. I'll know the kind of area i'm looking for but it'll sometimes take 10 minutesof browsing until I find my desired artist.

More recently, HMV have also started selling T shirts themed with various music and entertainment groups/people. You can buy Spongebob Squarepants and Stewie from Family Guy, or you can buy Michael Jackson etc

I personally am a fan of HMV, just be aware of certain high prices.

Summary: I am a fan of HMV, it's nice to go look at a product sometimes even if you'll only buy it off Amazon
