Advantages: Great cheap frozen food, nice, friendly atmosphere

Disadvantages: Not enough attention on tinned products and such

Nearly always confused with the country of the same name Iceland isn't really that old coming to life in the early 1970s and now operating round about 660 stores across the UK. The shop's major speciality is frozen food though they do sell some groceries and have even branched out into selling kitchen appliances like fridge freezers and washing machine though from what I've seen this is still a work in progress. Iceland is a haven for students and literally anybody wanting to save a bit of money I have recently decided.

Often overshadowed by the price waring of Asda, Sainsburys and Tescos, Iceland chugs along in the background beating them all hands down with its own variety of frozen food. There's nothing tasteless or bad about the products at all. I was amazed when I first shopped here at how little I spent. Only about 6 items in my trolley went over 1.00 and it included all your usual essentials like bread and milk. However its main disadvantage is that Iceland lacks a lot of tinned stuff and needs to expand into groceries a bit further to really become a threat to its competitors but the standard of the frozen food both in price and taste is exceptional. You can buy pizzas for dirt cheap prices and they're not those cheap, tasteless ones either but ones that can easily rival any takeaway outlet.

The store itself is laid out neatly with tills at both ends. It rarely gets crowded and there's always loads of offers on - in fact more so than a trip round Asda to be perfectly honest. The staff aren't really that helfpul and one or two have been quite unfriendly but its definately the items on sale that keep me going back to Iceland. Their party food range is superb for the Christmas season, or for any time of the year as I found out in the summer when I got everything I needed for a barbeque and saved at least 5.00 if I'd had bought thesame things from somewhere else and they've also opened up a lot of new opportunities for me as I have bought things I couldn';t normally afford for very cheap prices.

Iceland also operates a home delivery scheme. This involves registering for a free and getting a home delivery card. You can get a home delivery anytime you spend over 25.00 if you so wish. I think this is a really interesting idea and was in operation a long time before other supermarkets followed suite though I also think they have started operating an online ordering facility too.

I personally think that Iceland is well worth checking out even if you only do it once and never go back again. I also hope that in the future the store will continue to expand and up the game over its competition and I can also hope for the removal of Coleen Nolan, Kerry Katona and Jason Donovan from its adverts.

Summary: My favourite new shop

Iceland really tried to go up market (although still cheap) about 10 years ago by being the 1st supermarket to only sell organic frozen veg. Sadly they fell on their face and had to back down. Instead we've got Kerry and their patronising and sexist advertising. Sigh.

The main thing that I like about Iceland (and it's about the only thing, actually) is the fact that they don't piss around with stupid prices - everything seems to be rounded to a nice even number! I hate it when things are like £2.53 - why not just £2.50??
