Advantages: good value for money, good quality
Disadvantages: no fresh vegetables
Iceland - Can it replace your supermarket and save you money?
Well. Lets review it first before we answer this question:
What Can you buy there?
Ready meals:
If you like ready meals, Iceland will be heaven for you! I try not to eat to many ready meals but I like them and I think the Iceland brands (their store brand in particular) are of reasonable quality and offer very good value for money. They are very tasty too!!
Frozen fish
They have a huge choice of frozen fish, mussles, prawns... more or less everything you can imagine. Most of the time I go for the some kind of fish. Here its usually: U get what you pay for. They have the usual buttered fish which is, in my opinion, better than most of the other storebrands (e.g. Morrisons) and at the same time cheaper! But you can also get real fish fillets and brands like Birdseye. The quality is great (for frozen fish) at you cant them really cheap there!
--> If I feel like fish, I go to Iceland
Frozen potato products
There is a whole range of frozen potato wages, chips, croquettes in all forms and shapes. My favourite: Sothern Style Chips, they are truly amazing!!! ;)
Frozen meat
Personally I never buy frozen meat, but they do offer it.
Other products:
they also have tinned, jarred stuff like in a normal supermarket. You can also buy bread and booze. All of this you can get at a very competitive price most of the time. E.g. a big pack of pringles for just a pound. Or Dolmino pasta sauce 2 for 2 pounds etc etc. They choice is not huge, but the prices are small.
Chilled products:
They also offer a range of chilled products including minced meat, sandwhich toppings like ham, colselow, a range of other creamy salads and meats. Milk yogurt, basically everything you need.
WRONG; this is very it gets problematic with Iceland. Yes, they offer most of the stuff you need, yes, the offer very good value for money, but NO, unfortunately they do not offer fresh food like vegetables or green salads, which is a real shame. If the offered fresh stuff, I would probably do all my shopping there, but they dont.
Considering all the above, to answer the initial question if you can do all your shopping at Iceland and if it can save you money:
Well, yes it can save you money. In my opintion you get very good value for your money.
However, I think no matter how skinned someone is (and I know about being skinned ;), your diet should at least include some fresh ingredients! Keep it a healthy mixture. And cooking from scratch can be cheap to, its just more work. But its much better for you!
So I guess the answer should be now. Some stuff you can buy at Iceland but you will still have to go to another place to by some fresh veg etc!
Overall, very good supermarket and 4 stars from me because they dont offer fresh stuff (which, on the otherhand is why they can offer such cheap prices I guess)
Summary: good value for money, but you will still have to visit other supermarkets
