Advantages: Well priced food
Disadvantages: Not always great quality...
I gave Iceland a shot last week as I have been impressed with their adverts, telling me that I can get high quality food at very reasonable prices. Our local store is not actually too local and was a walk into town for me. I was surprised at the position of it in my home town as the car park was not clearly marked...they obviously had a lot of people use it on their way home from work.
As a vegetarian (although yes, I do eat fish) I was hoping to find a good range of food, but was a bit anxious as the adverts are often full of meat treats - chicken being a favourite of the store in many shapes and guises!
I went straight to the frozen vegetable section and was keen to fill up my freezer so that I could enjoy a continued wide variety of vegetables. I purchased broccoli - looked great on the bag but was full of small bits of broccoli. Carrots - baby ones that tasted very fresh, mixed vegetables - these looked very bland and the cauliflower in particular was extremely bitty, oven chips - a good size bag (one kilogram for one pound) and the chips cooked very well in my oven, sweetcorn - a nice big bag again, but it just was no where near as sweet as better known brands, sweet potatoes - becoming more and more popular now and are great with oven chips too, roasting potatoes - came out of the oven with a nice crispy outside and a fluffy centre...yum! And frozen peppers - sliced and ready to add to foods - I was a bit fed up with always chucking my fresh peppers away and this seemed to be a good compromise!
I also purchased some other goods and spent a bit of time looking around for good deals and bargains, I was particularly pleased with the range of frozen fish available and I purchased four sardines for three pounds that were enormous...in garlic butter and very very tasty!
The whole bill came to nineteen pounds and I was served by pleasant and helpful staff. That said, it did feel a bit grotty and almost had the air of a cash and carry...still it was worth it to stock up!
Iceland is definitely not anywhere I would choose to go on a weekly basis, I am afraid that Tescos beats them with this hands down, but when the freezer needs a big stock addition I will be tempted to go there again. I don't think that the vegetables are the best quality, but they will go well in pies, casseroles and on pizzas for example.
Summary: A credit crunch good idea!

- 11/03/09 I just dont rate Iceland, their prices aren't competitive. Everything is £1, or £2, if you go to a supermarket, you can weigh up prices and different products. However, if you had spent £6 more, you would have qualified for free delivery which would have saved you carrying your bags all the way home. |

- 11/03/09 I used to love their sliced peppers, but haven't been able to get any recently! Was wondering if they'd stopped them, but as you have been able to get them, hopefully it's a temporary thing! |
