Advantages: Home delivery, good choice, offers
Disadvantages: The odd dear items, small trolleys
My friend and I normally do our weekly shopping together at Asda, but last week it was really cold and rainy so we decided to go to the supermarket nearest to us, which just so happened to be Iceland. I had never been before and I had heard that they were really expensive so I was a bit aprehensive. The store I refer to is in Grimsby. It is not a very large store but it is well stocked with all kinds of things. When I entered the shop the first thing I did was reach into my pocket to find a pound coin for the trolley. I walked over to where the trolleys were stood and was amazed at the fact that I didnt need my pound coin at all, another thing that surprised me was that the trolleys are really small, so small that I didnt think there was any chance I would be able to fit all my shopping in it, but i carried on and hoped for the best. As I walked around I was quite shocked by the amount of variety there was and the prices were very reasonable too. Iceland sell a variety of things and not just food either, for instance they also sell: *Freezers. *Microwaves. *Fridges. *Cookers. *and a few other electrical/Gas appliances. They mainly sell frozen food such as: *Pizza's. *Ready-meals. *Sausages. *Burgers. *Chips. *Chicken *Frozen veg. *Frozen fish. *Frozen joints of meat. *Icecream and desserts. *and a whole lot more.. Not only do they sell frozen food but they also stock: *Fresh meat. *Cheese. *Yoghurts. *Crisps. *Biscuits. *Cakes. *Chocolate. *Sauces. *Pickles. *Pet food. *Loo roll *and much, much more.. Pricewise I found Iceland pretty cheap, which was kind of a surprise as I was expecting to go way over what I normally spend at asda, but in fact I ended up spending about 5 pounds less, which meant that i could nip in for a quick one at my local
pub on the way home (which in my eyes is a bonus). Some products were a bit more expensive than Asda such as: Crisps. I can usually get a big bag of mixed walkers crisps containing 20 packs from asda for 2.30, but I couldnt find any of these big bags at Iceland, instead I had to settle for a bag containing 20 packs of wotsits, which cost me 1.89 but to make things better it was buy one get one free. Beans. I normally pay 9 pence for a tin of beans from asda, but at Iceland they are 11 pence. I know its only 2 pence but if I bought I usually buy 5 tins so that makes it 10 pence. But along with the more expensive things there are some things that are cheaper than Asda too, such as: Gammon Steaks. I usually pay 1.39 for 2 gammon steaks from asda, but in iceland its only 99 pence for 2 that are considerably thicker than those from asda. Sausages. I usually pay 1.29 for a bag containing 20 sausages from asda, but from Iceland I can get a bag containing 20 for 1.19. Iceland have many offers on certain products such as: *Gammon steaks - buy one get one free. *Sausages - buy one get one free. *Sliced chicken breast - buy one get one free. *Freshetta Pizza - Buy one and get: Tub of mars icecream, Bag of southern fried chips and two sticks of garlic bread free. Once I had filled up my trolley so that it was nearly overflowing I made my way to the counter, at the same time i was dreading the cost. Once at the till my friend suggested that we take advantage of the free home delivery service that they were offering on shops over 25 pounds. I agreed, so I told the checkout operator that I would like home delivery and got ready to pack my shopping, and to my amazement an assistant came up and said she would pack it for me. I stood back and watched her pack my things and label each bag with a coloured sticker that said on it my name. I then gav
e the assistant my address and she told me that I could have it delivered between any of the following times: *10am-12pm *12pm-2pm *2pm-4pm I chose to have mine delivered between 12pm and 2pm and that was it I was done. No heavy shopping bags to lug home with me. It felt pretty strange, I had done my shopping and I had nothing to show for it. But at 1.30pm I did, when a very nice lady delivery my food and even brought it right to the door for me which I think is really nice. I really do recommend this shop, even if only to take advantage of the home delivery service and the many offers they have on all the time. The staff were all very friendly and they really seemed to put themselves out just to help you which is a rarety these days. There were no long queues to wait in aswell which was another good thing. If you decide to take advantage of the home delivery service then the checkout operator will give you a leaflet with your receipt. This leaflet contains a credit card sized card and a short form for you to fill in ready for the next time you shop there. The form just contains your name and address. Hand this in the next time you go and from then on you will just have to produce your card and they will know where to deliver your shopping. Great isn't it? Thanks for reading. CB:)

- 05/03/02 I never think to shop there even though we have one locally! I always smile at the advert though you know, but a pack of fish fingers and get a turkey, a can of dog food and enough apple pies to feed a small town free! |
