Index ExtraNewest Review: ... cooking equipment as soon as possible, my mum suggested trying the Index catalogue in Littlewoods (just round the corner) for the same goods. I?d never been in Littlewoods before, but it?s a department store along the lines of Debenhams/BHS. My first impression was dominated by their range of clothes and Christmas gifts, but up on the second floor they had a small Index area dedicated to their general catalogue. The free catalogue is smaller in area than the Argos one (making it easier to carry in a bag) but a whopping 994 pages still allow it to cover a large range - jewellery, sports, electrical, interiors, home appl ... more |

Index Extra is one of the catalogues offered by Littlewoods after Littlewoods bought out Index. Quite where one company starts and the other ends isn't so clear now, but my review focuses on my experiences of using the Index Extra catalogue out of the Littlewoods branch in Oxford. You can find Littlewoods and all these catalogues on the web ( www.littlewoods.co.uk ). There?s a specific Index website as well ( www.indexshop.com ), but that?s not really what I?m reviewing either - for my purposes, Index is a catalogue shop that works something like Argos (I?ll come to the major difference later). Sometimes you?ll find a shop called Index, sometimes Index ... Read the complete review

Now I’ll start by saying that I have used the Index shop several times and never experienced a problem. Armed with their lastest catalogue and a cup of tea I sat down in my new house to peruse what was on offer. Flicking through the index catalogue I soon found what I wanted to buy, a Delonghi dragon heater. Knowing my desired object would be heavy and bulky I was more than happy to pay that little bit extra to have it delivered directly to my door. Grabbing my credit card I phoned through my order which was accepted eagerly, in exchange I was told it would be delivered on the following Tuesday. Not knowing my new neighbours yet, and not wanting to leave ... Read the complete review

I find it very useful to belong to a mail order catalogue. There are certain down sides to it of course, but I believe the pluses outweigh the minuses. Let me start with the drawbacks then: (With index in particular) there is an insurance you can take out on the products that you buy. It’s called “extra cover”. If anything happens (including accidental damage) within the first year of ownership, then they will either replace the item, or give you a refund. The choice is yours (this cover also includes clauses for disability and unemployment, and if you have to go in to hospital). For this service you pay a percentage of your balance ... Whilst browsing through different catalogue's at home I started comparing prices from Argos and Index. It may surprise some that I have found the prices at Index generally tend to lower than at Argos. Obviously this is not applicable in all cases, but in most cases the price was either on the same level, if not lower than Argos. The general shopping experience at Index was, however, similar to that Argos. Generally unhelpful and bored looking staff, a very long waiting time (20 mins) for the goods to come to me (with none of the bored looking staff members letting me know what the hold up was until I asked), but for usually a better price I would personally check ... A catalogue very similar to Argos' but not so many people in the queue. Some of the prices in the catalogue are a few pennies cheaper than Argos but mostly they are about the same. Index shops can usually be found in Littlewood shops and they even put a catalogue so that you can browse through it while you pop in and have a cup of tea or a meal. With this and Argos being so similar with the Christmas season on the horizon it might be a good idea to remember this and go to both to see which has the shortest queues!! ...
