Advantages: Car Boot Sale is Huge on Sunny Days
Disadvantages: A lot of the market trader stalls sell the same junk.
For anyone who has desperately wished there was a market just a teensy bit like the kind you get outside every second tube station in London, for anyone who has lamented the lack of beanie baby stalls or anyone who's only desire is to see a table covered with Pokemon cards or cartoon socks for 99p, let me introduce you to Ingliston Market. Held every Sunday from 10am, Ingliston Market is surprisingly easy to find for a place which is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Situated right next to Edinburgh Airport, you can follow signs for the airport until you see signs for Ingliston and the Royal Highland Centre, which is a five minute walk from the market. The best part of the market is unarguably the car boot section, particularly on a sunny day. The traders stick out a mile, and thankfully there aren't too many, so you can concentrate on the honest booters offering an honest bargain. To net the best buys, show up early, and don't forget to check the very first row, which faces market traders tables - it can be easy to miss out these Car Boots, and mistake them for part of the trading market. Even in the pouring rain you will find people determined to sell their tat (and your treasure) under plastic covers. The market section is worth a look, once you are there anyway. Most of the stalls consist of pirate CD ROMs and Videos, SIM cards and OnDigital Boxes. There's even the odd trader selling current cinema releases on video, which I can highly recommend that you leave well alone. They are usually bad pirate copies from the states, or the result of a shaky VCR smuggled into the Odeon last week. However, there are some stalls worth a look. There is a shoe stall which sells shoes so cheaply I tend to go a bit faint whenever I see them, and someone else has to hold onto my wallet for me. And for the record, I have bought shoes here, and they are of equal quality to shoes I have bought at any high str
eet shoe store. In fact, better quality than some of those. The butcher is also worth a peek. He stands up in his meat van with a microphone and a stack of dead animals, and provides lively entertainment for anyone who cares to listen. I have never actually bought meat from him, but I see plenty of regulars who buy every week, so I guess that says something. There's the standard trader performing "miracles in car maintenance", and Pokemon Dealers who cry "Get your cards here, my prices are the same as everyone else's!" and a few good second hand book stalls. A local radio station thumps out tunes on loudspeakers all morning, to keep people spending, and there's a bouncy castle and "Funhouse" to keep the kids amused. A final word of warning - don't go near anything that even vaguely resembles a hot dog or hamburger, unless you want to spend the rest of the day on the toilet. However, the mini-doughnuts do have my coveted seal of approval. Ingliston is about 45 minutes from Glasgow, and half an hour from Dunfermline or Inverkeithing over the Forth Bridge. So next time you fancy Rooting for Loot at a quality Car Boot, come to Ingliston Market.
