Advantages: Lots for the keen photographer

Disadvantages: Sharper service and price needed!

Jessops, the UK's largest photographic retailer, recently reported losses of almost £50 million after the digital camera market had its first slowdown in years and after the closure of 80 of its stores, they should be upping their game. I spent quite some time browsing the shop and not one of the staff thought it worth asking if they could help.

Some of stickers that told me about its products and services: cameras, accessories, photos, gifts and, apparently, impartial advice; just the advice is slow of coming. Apart from racks of photo albums, Ilford photographic paper, cabinets of cameras, a row of speedy photo development machines and a desk at the back where a chap processed the prints, the shop did have all manner of services available, including turning my prints into quality photobooks, photo caricatures and wall art. There was also a variety of clever gifts such as fridge magnets, mousemats, jigsaws and teddies.

I did eventually manage to attract the attention of one chap and to be fair he was confident and offered good advice but not, I may add, of the impartial variety. In the end I didn't see what I wanted at the price I wanted but it's hard to compete with the internet for the kind of stuff Jessops do. As I said they need to up their game!

Summary: Lots to offer if they had the time!
