This Christmas I had a hugely dissapointing experience with John Lewis. It has convinced me never to shop there again.

On 20th December 2006, I bought a AEG L86810 Washing Machine from John Lewis on line. It was delivered to me on the 2nd January.

On the first wash the machine shook so violently it tore up our lino and damaged our wall.

I contacted JL customer services department via telephone and email. It took 3 days for a response to our initial complaint. Then a further 3 days for someone else to get back to us (on that occasion they suggested placing carpet under the machine!). Finally, with a great deal of persuasion we managed to get an engineer out to us. His examination confirmed that the machine had been delivered with a broken leg and fractured internal pipe – the machine was unusable.

Next we contacted JL to tell them what the engineer had said. My wife had to argue with the girl on the phone to get the machine replaced. She told us we were not entitled to a replacement, and would have to wait for a repair. This was contrary to the Sale of Goods Act 1979. We asked for the matter to be escalated. Finally we were called back and JL agreed to replace the faulty product.

We had been without a washing machine for over 20 days, incurring charges at a launderette. Furthermore the faulty machine has damaged our lino, which a) will needed replacing at a cost of circa £40, and involved a lift and refit of a wc (that sits on top) at a cost of at least £80.

No one has offered any compensation, or seemed in any way concerned about our plight.
