Advantages: Peace of mind, Best customer service, Attentive Staff, Extra warranties and good after sale support
Disadvantages: Things are expensive in most cases
My very first impression of John Lewis was that it is very posh and expensive store, which sells same branded item twice the price of Tesco & Argos.
But with my shopping experience over the years, that has now changed. Now I believe that JL gives perfect peace of mind by paying little bit extra. I remember I had hard time returning electrical goods in Dixons (now Currys). This will not happen in JL.
I always do my research before buying anything. Couple of years ago I bought a washing machine from JL, which was same price as Currys but with 1 year extra warranty. So, by comparison, JL was lot cheaper than Currys in that case.
I do agree that other things are quite expensive there. But no one is forcing you to buy everything from there. If deal is good, JL is far better than other stores. Its customer service is very good and staff is very knowledgable and attentive. Staff in camera department has more knowledge than Jessops staff.
When you do shopping with JL, you always know that they sell you the best thing and never cater for substandard alternatives. e.g. Washing machines with less than 1000 rpm are useless, and JL don't stock them at all. Also as someone suggested in the reviews, it is very good for browsing and getting new ideas.
I use John Lewis quite a lot, but only after doing my research on price and comparing pros and cons.
Summary: Perfect for shopping if you do your research before shopping.
