Advantages: Good range of products, free delivery online
Disadvantages: Some products can be bit expensive
I really like John Lewis. We do not have a store in the town where i live, but in the city closest to us there is one and when ever we go there, or to other cities we will often pop into John Lewis to have a look round. My local John Lewis is in Carlisle in Cumbria, and i will sometimes visit Newcastle where there is one there. Both these are large department stores with the one in Newcastle being slightly larger than my local one in Carlisle. Some smaller John Lewis stores do not sell everything, some may not sell many clothes, some may have a small electronics department so each can be different.
I must say i haven't bought that much stuff as they can sometimes be a little expensive but they do sell quality products and they sometimes have deals on products.
They are a large department store meaning them sell just about everything including clothes, cosmetics, jewellery and electronics and in each department they usually have a good range of products to choose from.
The stores are usually quite large and are often spread across a few floors but they make it easy to make your way around with floor level information all over the place, plenty of escalators, stairs and they have lifts for disabled people to use. The floors themselves are also usually easy to make your way around with wide walkways and items groups e.g. computers separate from televisions so it does not get too busy.
In our local John Lewis, the main ground floor has all the cosmetics, perfumes etc on and this floor can often get busy as they have lots of different stalls but they also have quite a few of desks where staff can allow you to try different products or actually pay to have things done like nail polish etc.
In the clothes section they clearly label men's, women's and children's sections so you know exactly where to go to find things you are looking for.
They usually have a wide selection of clothing with big brand names to choose from, but i can't really talk about the clothes section much as i don't really use it.
My favourite section of John Lewis is the electricals department as i love electricals and gadgets. Here they have a computer section. The computer section in our nearest store is not huge, but they have some of the biggest brand computers including HP, Sony, Apple and others and they often specialise in more unique and expensive computers. They also have plenty of laptops. The computers are all usually turned on but they are often put on those stupid demo modes where a password box comes up when you move the mouse but if you ask a member of staff they will be happy to unlock it for you, and they are not like a popular computer superstore, as at JL they do not always try to get you to buy them.
Also in the electronics section, they have a good choice of televisions, dvd player and digital boxes. The TVs are usually turned on so you get an idea of picture quality.
They also have your standard home electronics such as radios, cd players and HiFi's and them they have kitchen appliances such as kettles and toasters. I can't remember if they sell cookers and large kitchen appliances but i think they might do.
John Lewis also sell games, both games consoles and games, and also childrens games and board games. They do not have a huge range of these sorts of things but they have enough.
OK i'll now talk about the website. John Lewis have a great website www.johnlewis.co.uk where you can browse through every single one of their products, read product descriptions and view images of the products. Also on the website you can order anything to be delivered to your home, for free!
I was quite shocked when i discovered John Lewis deliver for free to anywhere in the UK. Most other large department stores often add a small P&P fee but (i think) everything is free.
I usually buy stuff from them online as it is hard for me just to visit their stores when ever i like. I have ordered a couple of items online and they usually delivery fairly quick, for free delivery i was pleased as i don't mind if things take a little longer when it is free P&P. I think it took about 3 days for my products to arrive.
One thing i forgot to mention, is at christmas time they sell a whole range of christmas trees, decorations and lights which can all be ordered online. I have just ordered a nice candle from them which did actually arrive yesterday but i was out so it was taken back to my local post office.
I think John Lewis is more up market than some stores and you can tell this by the selection of products they have in certain areas, like i mentioned about the computer section earlier, they only supply big brand name products. It is similar with the christmas decorations, they are often quite posh up market products.
Overall i do like John Lewis as they have a good range of products from all different areas, they usually seem to be high quality products but this often does mean the price can be higher but sometimes it is worth paying more for quality.
I have been pleased every time i have bought from them and have never had any problems so i cannot talk about returns and that side of the business, but i know the staff are all very kind and understanding so i'm sure they will accept returns.
I recommend John Lewis, even just to have a browse round. Check out their website as well to get an idea of the products they sell. I really like the store and i'm sure many other people do.
Summary: A good all round deaprtment store which usually has everything you need.

- 14/11/08 I love John Lewis and am lucky enough to have their Oxford Street store 20 mins away. I do love the fact that they price match as well (which we put to the test a few weeks ago) so you can knock them down on price and they also offer great guarantees as well. |

- 14/11/08 I do love shopping at John Lewis, sadly there's not one near to where I live or work. I'd just point out that there is a separate category for the online site if you want to write a separate review of your experiences with the website :) |
