Advantages: Reliable shop, customer focussed
Disadvantages: Some departments a bit old fashioned
I have always found John Lewis to be such a reliable shop both in terms of customer service and the quality products that they sell.
Whenever I have made a big purchase I have gone to John Lewis unless there is a huge discount to be had elsewhere.
Recently I was buying a dishwasher, a microwave and a washer dryer. I shopped around including on internet sites and John Lewis was actually the cheapest for all 3 items I wanted when you take into account they do free delivery whereas I think Dixons wanted £15 just to deliver one item.
I could have ordered online but I had some gift vouchers to use so I went into the shop and thought I would just ask a few questions about the products too to make sure they were what I wanted. The man I spoke to in the appliances department was so helpful and knowledgeable. I would actually expect nothing less from John Lewis as I have always found their staff to be a cut above the rest but it was nice to know this is still the case. He advised me in a way that was honest and realistic - knowing that I wasn't buying the top end products but saying that for the price what I was buying was good value but also advising me that Washer dryers are not known for reliability but that unless I was going to buy a top of the range Miele or Bosch for £700 or £800 then there was not much to be gained by buying a £400 or £500 machine rather than the £300 I was going for.
The delivery was made at the date and time specified and the drivers kindly called half an hour before just to let me know they were on there way. All in all great service which is what I have come to expect from John Lewis.
I would always go to John Lewis to buy big appliances or a large purchase that I wanted to be a quality product and also with a good guarantee as John Lewis usually offer an extra year guarantee that other shops don't offer. On televisions and some other electrical items they will offer a 5 year guarantee for free which is brilliant.
I love shopping in the home department as they have some great products and brands that you can't always get in other places, however I do find that in terms of their smaller products they are more expensive than elsewhere.
I sometimes shop in the clothes department but only in the cheaper ranges where they sell Mexx, Levi's etc rather than the designer ranges but find that I don't often buy clothes there really as the range is quite small and a lot of it is old fashioned.
In the John Lewis in Watford where I usually go there is a nice café at the top of the shop where it is great to rest your legs and have a sandwhich or cup of coffee. They also do hot meals but I would say they are expensive - you can easily pay about £7 or £8 for a cup of coffee and a sandwich. If you have a problem in John Lewis or are complaining about something that is their mistake then as my mum has found out on a couple of occasions they are really very good to the customer when it is John Lewis mistake and not a customer just trying to complain about nothing! On two occasions now my mum has been given a voucher for 2 coffees and 2 pastries in the café as an apology while she had to either wait a long time in the store or complain about something due to miscommunication from John Lewis direct and John Lewis the store.
All in all a great , reliable shop and I am just praying they are not one of the next big shops to go into administration - I very much doubt it as they always seem to be doing a roaring trade and are very good value and sell such a wide range of products - but the High street would definitely miss something if the John Lewis group disaapeared.

- 08/01/09 I agree - love John Lewis have always been great at price matching and I find the staff really helpful. Last week they refunded me in full the price of an unwanted gift with no receipt and just my word that I didn't think it had been bought during the 20percent day. |

- 03/01/09 Lucky you, I've found the staff (other than people I knew beforehand) to always be rude and condescending. |
