Advantages: Great quality goods

Disadvantages: Often expensive

Where would I be without John Lewis?! We are lucky enough to have one very close to us, so I do shop there quite a lot. For those who haven't been, John Lewis is a large department store, stocking all the things you would expect - baby items, clothing, shoes, toys, kitchenware, makeup, bags, sports equipment, school uniform, stationary, glassware and gifts. I'm sure I've missed some things out there, but you get the picture.

John Lewis do tend to deal with the more expensive end of the market. The women's clothes in particular tend to be the more expensive brands such as Coast or Ted Baker, although ours does have Oasis and Warehouse. Similarly for children's clothing, they have their own brand, plus lots of branded and expensive items. Most things are competitively priced though. Their strapline is 'never knowingly undersold', and you will be hard pressed to find the same items cheaper in another store. They sometimes have days where they will offer 20% off certain items if other shops are doing the same.

Their kitchen department in particular is fantastic, with some lovely Le Creuset pans and other good quality kitchenware. But they also stock those small but hard to find items, like jelly moulds and baking beans. They have a large toy department which is expanded in the run up to Christmas, with a large variety of both small and large items. They do some lovely craft kits and wonderful soft toys.

Their children's shoe fitting service is good, and the staff in the electronics department are always happy to spend time demonstrating an item for you. We've also used their carpet fitting service, which we were extremely happy with. On the rare times that we have had to return an item, the staff have been kind and courteous.

The toilet facilities are excellent, with a mother and baby room with a private feeding area, and a family toilet cubicle with a child sized toilet and sink. The facilities are always lovely and clean. They also have a restaurant, which is to be honest over priced for the quality of the food, but it's still nice and kept clean and tidy. There's a lot of variety too, with both hot and cold meals, and children's lunch bags too.

We buy all our bedding from John Lewis. Although it's not cheap, the quality is superb and you know you are buying items that will last. It's well worth going at sale time, as there are always some good bargains to be had.

Summary: The staff are the most helpful and polite around!

Yea, JL are cutting members down on their pension scheme. Another once super retailer struggling to fill that void in lost revenue. Watch-out for the January price hikes, when VAT is up 2.5%!!!

They're quite expensive though, I got some towels from there as a moving in present and the hand towel alone was £10! I later bought some more from Tesco where the hand towel was about £3! Sam
