Advantages: Luxury Lace Products.
Disadvantages: Only small exhibition.
For over 150 years the Lace Market area of Nottingham has been a centre of excellence for the production of lace, which has been sold throughout the world. The Lace Market Centre is advertised extensively and from the literature you get the impression that this is a large display centre showing the history of lace in Nottingham. Unfortunately when you arrive at the centre it is a bit disappointing. Although there is an exhibition in the centre it is primarily a shop selling lace products. There are a few pieces of lace making equipment and some displays telling the story of lace. At the back of the centre there is a small area where about ten people can sit to watch a film about lace making. At the front of the centre there are a number of tables and chairs where you can sit and have a cup of tea and coffee. The centre has a hire service for an audio tape service so you can take a walk around the Lace Market area and listen to the history of the lace making industry and the local area. The audio wand hire costs £1.95. For more information about the centre you can visit their website at: http://www.nottinglace.org Although the centre is very pleasant and has some wonderful lace products for sale you should visit it knowing that it is primarily a shop with a few exhibitions about lace.
