Disadvantages: They dont yet have a store in Northern Ireland., You might find yourself hooked on their products!
I have to confess that Dooyoo is not my only vice. Yes folks – I have many addictions and strangely enough plastic is one of them! Yes plastic! Anything made of the stuff I have it! I have plastic tubs, boxes, bags – I even put the stuff in my hair in the morning. Come on – where would we be without plastic? So before I get carried away I want to tell you about Lakeland Plastics (or Lakeland Limited as its now known) because quite simply it’s a Mecca for all things polymer!
Lakeland is a family owned business, established almost 40 years ago and based in Windermere in the Lake District. The business was born out of (yeah you guessed it) plastic! An agricultural feed salesman had the novel idea of supplying plastic bags in which to wrap poultry. Not much of a genius, more a fanatic like myself, the company grew to a business supplying a range of kitchen accessories. In 1997 the name changed to Lakeland Limited because it was seen as offering a more diverse range of goods. The company offers some 4000 products and from its humble beginnings as a mail order firm, has grown to boast an additional 25 stores and a highly successful website.
Whilst on the mainland I have had occasion to visit one of their stores and find them to be bright, airy and incredibly well laid out. Staff are friendly and the plastic bags your purchases come in are just kitsch. Sorry but I did warn you I was hooked on the stuff! Like the catalogues before them, the shops offer a diverse range of goods – the majority of which you wont find anywhere else since the company makes most of them in its Windermere base. And, although I am reluctant to admit it, the image of plastic buckets, dish-brushes and polythene bags couldn’t be a further representation of what this company sells.
A lot of gadgetry is employed in their products and the main aim is to make life easier in the home. They have re-branded themselves as “The Creative Kitc
henware Company” and that’s exactly what they are – continually innovating to bring new products to their customers. A lot of what the company sells is in fact based on recommendations from their existing customer base. So if you spot an ingenious product somewhere in the world let them know and there is every possibility they will start producing it. The company does sell items for other areas of the home and you are sure to find something you can’t resist! Fine foods are a tradition of Lakeland and some of the products they supply are exquisite and taste just wonderful!
I chose recently to purchase some products from their website and found the service on it to be as excellent in the shops and through their catalogue ordering. The site is simple in design with a blue and white background and is organised by category depending on what it is you are after. You wont find a plastic category but you are sure to find that a lot of products within each category are made from plastic! You will find that the pictures and descriptions are well laid out and that there are in fact some customer comments to support the company view.
Ordering is easy – like most other sites you add it to your basket and away you go. Don’t get carried away on the plastic though or you might have to call upon your plastic cards to pay it off long term. Like you need an excuse to take that out anyway! If you prefer to order by phone their number is 015394 88100 and lines are open 8:30am – 9:30pm Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 8:30pm Saturday and 9am to 8:30pm on Sundays. Ample time you will agree to place your order. If the urge comes to stock up on some more plastic then the website is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Service is, as you would expect with a family owned business. Fast, efficient and very friendly. I ordered my goods late on a Sunday night and they arrived first thing on Wednesday morning. Even by Parcelfo
rce’s standard that’s pretty good! Delivery is cheap - £2.95 no matter how big your order is and any orders over £38 are free. Spend £45 and you can choose a free gift. If the urge for plastic really is too overpowering you can opt for the £4 next day delivery service. When it arrives you notice that its no ordinary parcel – the box is adorned with cartoons and the company logo. Its also well packaged – all in recyclable materials and you know there has been a personal touch added to it!
Payment is available in all major credit cards, cheques and postal orders. Furthermore they don’t charge you until the item has been despatched from their warehouse.
If you have a problem with anything you have bought they will accept it back without question. If its something cheap that would be a waste of money to return they will refund it and let you keep it. If something goes wrong in the process of ordering, delivering or returning you simply call their help line (same as for ordering) and they will gladly offer to help. If you have any special requirements they will work with you to help.
On their site Lakeland list 20 reasons why they are such a good company and it comes as no surprise that the number one reason is that customers come first. Personally I think there are more than 20 reasons to shop with them. Family owned businesses are few and far between these days and are synonymous with good service and quality. In short Lakeland are the bastion of customer service.
