Advantages: cheap, variety of foods, car park, products change weekly

Disadvantages: don't give bags, no baskets, long queues

For as long as I can remember I have always shopped in the usual Tesco or Sainsburys, it had always been the most obvious choice and something that I had been familiar with for most of my life really!

Then when I moved homes 3 years ago I found that I had a huge Lidl situated just across the road from my flats, put it this way I can see how long the queues are from my living room window!

I decided to go in and have a look around and to see what Lidl had to offer, everytime the shop would be packed with people buying in what seemed like bulk and that was just the weekly shop.

On entering the shop I found it is very spacious, they have cctv indoors and also outside for the huge carpark, a 'don't mess with me' security guard, huge trolleys because believe me you will need one.

There are all kinds of things for sale from bread to delicacies like continental cheeses and biscuits for the avid coffee drinker. You have huge freezers packed with everything from frozen pizza to gateaus. Alcohol is very cheap also.

My local has even managed to have an expansion, product wise, as if they were not already packed full of stuff, they now offer a baby range with heinz baby foods at the fraction of the price that you would expect to pay in a large supermarket. They have an extensive make up range and they seem to be adding more things every week, on my last visit I noticed they had multicoloured pasta in various shapes, part of there Italian week special.

Another service that you would not find in your supermarket is every week Lidl have a mini preview catalogue of what will be on sale the following week. This week they had all sorts of stationary in time for the schools opening up in the new year and a whole range of resources you would need and find use of even in your home. Every week the products change but still at the same affordable price. Grreat for the family on a budget.

Lidl stock all European products also so even if you are away from home you will still be able to find your favourite product.

I now buy the neccessities like bread, sugar, eggs, pasta, vegetables, crisps, drinks etc from Lidl. I find I save pounds on my shopping.

Lidl have deliveries 3 times a week so you know the produce you are getting is of good quality and is fresh. Now the friut and veggies are half price but still at the same standard, so even better.

A point to mention is that a credit and debit cards can only be used if you go over £10 worth of shopping in my local, i do not know if this goes for all stores. Also they do not have any baskets so you have to carry your items around. We usually put our stuff into any used packaging box that is lying around. Another thing that can be improved on is that they do not give carrier bags , if you want one you have to pay around 2p for one so i just take my own bags with me.

I have now managed to convert my friends and family to shop in Lidl for everyday things rather than going to big supermarkets where they would pay more than they need to.

Lidl is open every day from 8am to 8pm with the exception of Sunday when it is open 10am to 5pm. Open throughout xmas except for xmas day, same goes for all other hols. Sometimes you find that Lidl is the only shop open from miles around on such holidays.

Summary: Lidl is very versatile and you can save a bundle on your weekly shopping.

Shame Lidl exploit their employees, but I do know at least one major UK chain who does the same. As for the products at Lidl, I find them great and lots cheaper, with some very unusual items.

Lidl is German and a fierce competitor of Aldi (also German) which is still No 1. Unfortunately Lidl don't behave well concerning their employees, they exploit them.
"they do not give carrier bags , if you want one you have to pay around 2p", I like this! There's already too much plastic around.

I've always found Lidl to be a fantastic place to shop, a lot of the food is delicious and we save £100s!
