Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Messy and lacking quality
Lidl was created before the 2nd World War in Germany at a time when the country was going through huge economic problems, which would eventually lead to the Nazi taking over.
Their idea was to bring basic household items and food to cash stripped families, which were seeing the value of their money being eroded every day by the rampant inflation.
After 2nd World War Lidl consolidated in Germany and starting in the 60s began to expand in Europe.
Their business model has never changed. The priority is on bringing low cost food and items to the final consumer. "Bringing" is really the word, since many times items are not even unwrapped, and just left in the shop in the large box in which they came in!
I have been to Lidl few times and I have always skipped all the fresh food, which I find not very enticing, while I have selectively chosen few wines, soft drinks, and some tinned or canned food.
I think that Lidl has some good value items, but I am not over excited about them either.
Summary: Only ok for selected goods
