Advantages: Slightly cheaper, shopping alternative
Disadvantages: Not massive savings
Lidl is a supermarket that prides itself on providing good value products. It's products are meant to be cheaper because they use foreign brands, rather than familiar British brands.
I've been to a couple of different Lidl's and to be honest I've not been that impressed. I'll confess that I didn't go into Lidl armed with a list of prices from Tesco or Asda and compare their equivalent versions, but from the review prices that I did do, I didn't notice a lot of savings, especially on the fresh produce.
I did notice some goods deals on frozen food, plus their weekly offers generally are worth a look. They do weekly deals on all sorts of things, not just food and drink. About a year ago we got a leaflet through the door with their latest offers, and hubby spotted a collapsable ladder he liked the look of! When we went to pick it up there was only one left, so you have to be quick to pick up some of their bargains!
I've heard from a few people that Lidl's fresh fruit doesn't seem to stay fresh for very long, but I've never bought any myself.
They do have a good range of fresh meats and cheeses, which a would recommend.
It is another option if you are looking for a bit more variety in your food shopping, plus some of their household products can be quite cheap.
Summary: Low budget foreign brand shopping
