Advantages: Can have very good stuff very cheaply
Disadvantages: Only get a week advance notice
Having finally finished putting together a cold frame from Lidl (it only took three months for the weather to be decent enough!) I figured I should give the store a quick review.
Lidl is known for being tremendously cheap. This is partly with nonbranded stuff and fruit and veg, however, you can get some decent offers on branded stuff too - for instance I got an eighteen bag pack of Skips and eighteen bag pack of NikNaks for only £2.50 a few weeks ago. I've seen Pepsi on sale in there quite a lot - at present it's two bottles for £1.45, and a lot of the Kinder chocolate ends up sold in there.
You can't live on such dribs and drabs though - you need to go to a bigger shop for that. My attempts to save petrol therefore mean I might never visit Lidl at all if it weren't for their website (http://www.lidl.co.uk/).
You see, Lidl always has a special offer on, and it changes twice weekly, on Sundays and Thursdays. This can be country based - at present for example, it's "French food". Or it can be based around a hobby - I got my cold frame for £20 when they had a Gardening offer running, and it looks like tomorrow they're switching to a Summer offer (gosh, that ice cream looks tempting). They event sell laptops there sometime - Targa won't be a brandname you'd see anywhere else, but I had one once, and not only was it a very decent price at the time (three years ago) but I swear you could run that thing over with a bulldozer and it would survive.
The problem is, you've got no control over when their offers are running. This can be frustrating - for instance when you WANT to buy a new laptop, have several hundred pounds burning a hole in your pocket, would happily buy Targa again and have no idea when they'll be selling them. When they DO appear, you'll have to make a decision fast - you can't go save for three months, or think for a few weeks. At most you'll have a week before they go on sale.
So, with Lidl, the trick is to watch the site, go when you see something you want, but don't depend on them having something. Lidl is something you just can't plan too far in advance for.
Summary: Watch their website to get advance notice of offers

Lakerfanster - 07/05/08 Lidl is getting better but still is way behind the likes of Sainsburys, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda. Good review. |
