Advantages: may save a bit money
Disadvantages: sometimes not much choice
Lidl Supermarket can be found in most towns thesedays. They are marketed as a discount supermarket and with the credit crunch and people perhaps tightening their purse strings, then if you hadn't visited this shop before you may have found yourself inside.
Lidl is usually marketed quite well. Sometimes they have adverts on the tv and in the newspapers. I have notices more adverts since the credit crunch, as i'm sure they are trying to appeal to people's financial situation. We get a leaflet put through our door every other week advertising their special offers which start instore on mondays and thursdays. Also if you go to their website www.lidl.co.uk you can sign up to get their offers e-mailed to you and can look online at the offers.
Lidl is a German brand and you may find German Suasages, Saurkraut and German Beers in here. They do have these shops in Germany as well and they sell similar things. They also sell brand named items such as Colgate, Kellogs, Cadbury's and so on as well as cheaper brands. I've never seen a Lidl branded item as it is just more cheaper brands that i've never heard of.
They always suggest if you buy a certain level of price of goods then you should move a step down. What I mean by this is that there is 4 levels of shopping in a normal supermarket
Premium
Brand Name
Shop Label
Basic Label
Lidl has all these levels, as you can buy baked beans from each level and the price varies from roughly 7p for basic up to 60p for Premium, so shift a level down and you never know what you could save on your weekly shop.
Our local Lidl is a clean enough shop, but it can get quite cluttered with cardboard at times and this can lie out in the middle of the floor and block the aisles. Sometime the staff at my local aren't much in a rush to clear it up either, but everyone has their off times I guess. Also the queues can be quite lenghty sometimes. Lidl have charged you for their carrier bags since I can remember and the normal pag is 3p. I know that other shops are giving you points you reusing bags and so on, but I think this is effective as it may make you reuse your bags to save a few pence.
A good allround shop that may help you save a bit money!
