Supermarket but not as you are used to! (Lidl)

Advantages: Cheap, good quality for price, wide range

Disadvantages: Stack it high sell it cheap means stores aren't welcoming

I am a recent convert to Lidl since a new one opened near me. The store itself is a little bit basic and spartan- it is a little bit like a Makro warehouse when you enter- full of pallets on a stack it high sell it cheap philosophy and it leaves you in no doubt that it is a discounter but this is no bad thing.

It is a little bit different from the usual supermarket things provided- indeed I notice that this Lidl is quite dull and dark inside, but not only that there are no baskets or music instore- sometimes no music actually seems weird the place is so quiet but I guess both are cost saving- indeed a trolley encourages people to buy more!

The products are very good. Lidl does stock brand names- I get Barr soft drinks and Fox's biscuits in their- it is not just unbranded stuff. Some of the unbranded stuff is excellent however- in particular the ice cream was great!

They also have a number of special offers on. I have brought various bits of electronics including a shredder from them and it is the best shredder I have ever bought!

The store doesn't have bags for free- you pay for them and are expected to pack at the packing counters not at the tills, which is no problem really.

In the end if you can get used to the differences from the main brand supermarkets, the discount ones are excellent
