Advantages: Cheap and bulk buying
Disadvantages: Membership only
Makro is a Cash and Carry store, designed at bulk selling items to small shops and restaurants, as well as any small business or self-employed person. It is an application only shop, access only by membership card, however, these are obtainable by any owner of a small business or certain employees of.
The products sold are of all types, specialising in food stuffs (and of course large proportions) but they also sell lighting, work tools, clothes, DVD's, Jewellry, etc... making it a great place to shop.
Every month, the 'Makro mail' is published which is a catalogue of so called 'bargains', offering cut-price items while stocks last. This comes in two sections, the standard 'Mail', which generally gives a selection from a cross-section of all the items available to purchase, and the 'Makro mail food' which again, tries to vary what is on offer.
Unfortunately, the makro stores aren't located within reach of everywhere and at the present time are actually closing stores, like the Swansea store which closed a few months ago.
Makro has its own 'cheaper' food brand much like the Tesco Value range, known as 'Aro' brand. In my experience, the items from this branding tend to be very good quality, certainly comparing with the supermarkets cut-price branding.
One thing to remember when shopping in Makro is that VAT is not automatically applied to the non-food items due to it being a store for business, therefore if you are shopping for yourself, don't forget to add VAT to the self price or you'll have a nice suprise at the checkout.
Summary: excellent prices
