Advantages: Good fresh food

Disadvantages: Getting smaller due to the supermarkets

When I was a student I used to shop in my local market all of the time, one of the reasons was that it ran every single day of the week andit was the place that you could shop around and get the freshest and best fruit and veg in the town rather than going to the local supermarkets which have now taken over the high street and pushed the traditional markets almost out of business, certainly the market in my home town of Northampton has sufferred a lot and is no longer very busy on many days of the week, in fact we had a flyer the other day trying to attract new stall holders to the market.

Where there has been an increase is in the number of Farmers Markets cropping up, there is an excellent one in Olney once a month which we have attended and Towcester also has one, both are great places to get good quality mushrooms and also ome meat products however these are often not cheap and you are paying extra for the better quality stuff.

Finally no review of markets would be complete without mention of one of the most famous markets in the country and that is the rather unique experience of Camden Market on a Sunday when it is bustling with sellers of alternative clothing over the smell of freshly fried noodles and sweet and sour pork, a fascinating place to wander around and look at the oddities on the stalls and in the crowds. A place that shows that punk never dies, at least not in this little corner of North London.
