Advantages: not that many of them about

Disadvantages: they exist

Fortunately there are not too many of these supermarkets in Ireland. I have been in a couple of them in England as well as here and never really saw what all of the fuss was about.

The one in Ballymena is the pits. The only reason people shop in there is that they derive some sort of kudos from it (there are a lot of rich folk in Ballymena). The one in Belfast is better and obviously much bigger. Though it suffers from the same uppity middle class air as the rest.

These places are of the kind you can't really imagine them having in France. The clothes are drab or garish and the food is effluvia. Yet you can go into one and find it packed. Hello! Are these people mental?

Everytime I have been in one it is to try and figure out what it is that people see in them that I am missing. 'It's the food', they say. Whatever, fair dos to the Indians for making folk that that sliced onion rolled in flour is haute cuisine but there you go. At least my local greasy fry hasn't started calling his onion rings bhajis.

We have what was often called a plae imitation of M&S. Personnallly I think Dunne's are better. Let's face it, anyone whoe can call their own brand St. Bernard and not get mistaken for a pet shop has my vote.

Now remember, get down to M&S for your expensive meals for one, taupe pullovers and own brand caviar before it is too late.
