Advantages: nice food

Disadvantages: very expensive

Everyone knows that Marks and Spencers food is expensive. Unless you are a good wage (not common down in Cornwall) then you won’t be able to afford to do your weekly shop in Marks and Spencers, unless you live on rice and pasta.

We have just had a huge new Marks and Spencers built with a nice shiny brand new food hall. I have noticed a price drop in the clothes but not in the food. Compared to every other supermarket they are really expensive.

So does the quality of the food match the price? I would have to say that, yes, it does. You do get what you pay for! The Marks and Spencers own brand food is a long way from Safeway Savers. The cheaper M&S brand food tastes nicer than some other supermarkets expensive range.

I can particularly recommend their Indian and Chinese foods, these are already prepared and usually just have to be heated up in the microwave or oven. They have a huge choice of these and also food from other countries, Italy, Mexico etc. Yum.

Food halls in M&S don’t tend to be very large, well, they aren’t here anyway. They do manage to squeeze lots of different products in the space though without making it look crowded. They sell everything from ready meals and packed sandwiches to fresh fruit and wine. I have noticed though that everything they sell is healthy food. All low fat stuff which still tastes nice but I don’t particularly want to loose weight. I spent ages trying to find full fat crisps once until I was told that they didn’t sell them.

The shelves are always full with the exception of the sandwiches etc. These are obviously fresh every day and they don’t want hundreds left over at the end of the day. Get in there a bit earlier if you want to buy your dinner!

The service from staff is very good. Although they aren’t the fastest at serving they concentrate more on customer service and are always friendly.

One down side
is that all of our M&S stores are miles away from any car parks and they don’t have their own. If you want to buy loads of shopping you will either need to take ten people with you, have super strong arms or get one of those Star Trek transporter things installed at your house.

Overall M&S is a great place to buy your food if you can afford it, especially if you are health conscious. If you don’t want to spend hundreds of pounds every week though this is not the place to shop.

Nice for sandwiches/lunches once in w while, but definitely not the place to do your average weekly shop!

I spent one summer working in an M&S foodhall & at the end of every day, us staff were able to buy goods at half price. It was great - I spent the summer eating like a queen!
