Advantages: High street location, Plain chocolate, Vegetarian Wines
Disadvantages: Lack of suitable vegan range
Marks and Spencer do have a reputation for quality but you can go too far and I believe this store does. Anything they can put cream into they will. All well and good for most people but the lactose intolerant and vegans won't go very far here. The advantage of M&S is that they are still based in the high street. In Kingston-upon-Hull there is a Kwik Save, Farmfoods and Jacksons (a long established local company operating mini markets throught Yorkshire and the East Midlands) in the city centre. For hummus, a staple of my vegan diet, M&S is the only place to go. Sadly though there is very little else I can buy here. I will give credit though for their plain choclate being milk free, not all are, and clearly labelling vegetarian suitable wines. Actually the chocolate is quite nice and not too dark. But that's not enough to save them in my eyes. Practically all of their food is meat, fish or dairy. even where other stores manage to make suitable products M&S still use milk. Sandwiches. So synonymous with Marks and Spencers it gets a sentance to itself but they don't make any suitable for me. They used to make sorbet's but they've stopped that in favour of ice cream. Vegetable curries have cream or yogurt, even rice. They do sell some organic products, but not many. Of course they have recently started accepting credit cards. Welcome to the 20th century! If only they's acknowledge that the customers of today aren't all port drinking, caviar eating, pheasant hunters.

- 12/08/00 I'm afraid I'm only a part time veggie now but when I was veggie I was most disappointed by M&S. As soon as I discovered something that was tasty like the indian selection they seemed to stop making it. I sent a letter of complaint about it and they sent me a huge list of all the products suitable for veggies and vegans. But the list mainly comprised of grocery and biscuits etc not proper food. |
