Advantages: Excellent returns policy
Disadvantages: still need some design help!
Marks and Spencer is finally emerging from a year of bad press and poor products. The new stores have had an overhaul, abandonning the traditional layout and branding and introducing new designers to help fuel it's recovery. The last time M&S was in favour and doing well, I was too young or disinterested to shop there. Now I am the required age - I am witnessing a struggle between the old mistakes and the new ground breaking design ideas. I'll give it another year or so before it learns to walk again. Per Una was a brilliant lifesaver and has resurrected the larger stores. George Davis introduced a completely un-M&S designed range and in my opinion should have done the same to the entire store. Autograph was a valiant effort but prices put it out of reach of most pockets and therefore alianated the M&S devotees. It still sits well now that Per Una is there as well but needs that middle ground to get people into the store again, in the first place. Food has always been a good area for the company and can't be faulted (usually) except on price. Underwear is definitely on the mend but still has a short way to go and the rest of the store has benefitted from a good price range if a little lacking on good colour choices. BUT by far the best thing about M&S is their returns policy! You need never use a changing room in their stores because it is just so darned easy to return stuff! You have an eternity to return unworn garments, with a receipt and even walk away with credit couchers if you don't have a receipt. And here's the all-time winner of returns policies - and I probably shouldn't be telling you this, but: If you buy something before a sale and that item is reduced before you get to wear/use the item - you can return and re-buy it for the reduced price - in the same transaction! Basically, there will never be a reason for you not to buy from them, when you can't make
up your mind! Try it at home - keep it if you like it - bring it back if you don't. AND don't get cheated in the sales - use your rights!

- 04/01/02 I have to admit that I wouldn't be seen dead in M&S but I suppose I ought to have a look around one since their supposed image revmap. |

- 04/01/02 You can even return without a receipt sometimes if clothes develop a fault they shouldn't. They go by the barcode on the label, which dates roughly in which era it was sold. |
