Advantages: Ideal for Christmas, good quality and price balance, lots to see in one place

Disadvantages: You have to be careful not to get carried away with these generic goods!

Matalan is one of my favourite shops to dip into every now and again and do a big shop in. The low prices mean it is all too easy for me to get a little carried away buying things I do not really need but every now and again I do not see the harm. I think it is an especially great place to do some Christmas shopping in.

I like the clothing ranges in here first of all, especially the women's clothes. I find that myself and my daughter can both always find our sizes in here and the clothes are usually well cut and very good quality for the prices. I especially love the fancy nightwear and lingerie they sell in here at a fraction of the price I pay for similar in M&S.

I am very impressed with this year's range of toys and games and have snapped up quite a few bits for my grandson already including a Thomas torch, puzzle set and toy for only £8 as they were £4 each or three for the price of two. I also picked up a couple of really lovely Fireman Sam books for just £1.50 each from their big range of children's books.

I like the homewares in here and especially the bed linen. I've had two sets from here and both have washed and worn well for nearly a year now having cost less than £20 each for the full sets including a fitted sheet and extra pillow cases. I have not really tried their cooking and baking things yet but I have to say that there prices are very attractive on a lot of their products.

I think this is certainly an ideal place to come for Christmas shopping. Of course you don't want to buy everything from here because as with Tesco and Argos, you don't want everyone to know instantly where the contents of your house or wardrobe came from! But for a few various bits and pieces this place is pretty unbeatable on their quality to price ratio.

Summary: A great place to visit, especially at Christmas.
