Advantages: Designers can give you new ideas, help with costing.

Disadvantages: Tend to push you into buying lots of extras.

We decided to replace our inherited 70's kitchen. I went round all the different showrooms but found the prices in MFI were nearer my price range.

With the assistance of a kitchen designer I planned my kitchen and worked out how many units I would need. She was of little assistance and I had to keep pointing out where the water, gas and drainage was. When I showed here which units I like she was intent on reproducing the picture in the brochure which wasn't practicle in my small kitchen.

As she wrote down all the units I would need and started adding them up I did some mental calculations and was confident I could afford it. However after she added on all the bits and pieces it came to £1200. I added up all the units and this came to £500 so £700 was for 'bits'. Bits that she added on included decor end panels which I discovered were exactly the same as the units actual sides.

I went ahead and bought the units and got my father-in-law to help us to fit them. With a bit of basic joinery we cut kickboards and a work top from B&Q. Along with a sink top costing £25 in a Homebase sale my kitchen cost under £600.
