Advantages: Cheap, functional
Disadvantages: Style, the wait
MFI used to be famous for cheap, build it yourself second rate furniture. It had a reputation for being poor quality and hard to assemble. People tended to be a bit embarrassed about owning MFI furniture. They went a bit upmarket and bought Hygena and Schriber in an attempt to convince us that their furniture was not so bad. Most people have some MFI furniture that they bought when they got their first home, or when guests were descending and there were not enough, beds, chairs or whatever in the house. IKEA has really wiped MFI out. Why? IKEAs furniture is well designed and fashionable. MFI is a bit staid and behind the times. IKEAs furniture is well built and easy to put togethr. MFI has improved a lot in this area and can probably compete. The real death knell for MFI is that you can't take your furniture home anymore. You need to arrange for it to be delivered. This would be fantastic if delivery happened that day or even that week, but sometimes it can take two months! You may even have to take a day off work to wait for delivery. MFIs furniture is simply not exciting enough to wait for. If I can drive to IKEA and pack stuff in the back of my car to build that day, I am going to pick IKEA. If I am happy to wait for furniture then I am going to choose something a little more interesting and attractive than an MFI piece. If you have a car choose IKEA instead, if not, order your furniture from bespoke furniture makers who are not always really expensive but at least have style.

- 17/08/00 I find that IKEA is better value for money - thier furniture lasts longer, looks better, and yes it's easier to buy. |

- 15/08/00 I too am a keen buyer from IKEA, my only wish is that they invent something a little better than an Allen key to make up your furniture. MFI suffered en image crisis about 10 years and has never been serious enough about reinventing itself. Hey, do you think companies like MFI ever read this stuff??? |

- 13/08/00 MFI don't make bad stuff - its the same quality as IKEA. I have a TV and Hifi from MFI which I put together myself. The problem with MFI is that they are having financial problems and are going through restructuring at present. IKEA just goes on expanding. IKEA is also a company for aspiring consumers whereas MFI is perceived as being cheap and cheerful and the rung below IKEA !! |
