Advantages: Lots of stores, not too expensive

Disadvantages: Not very cheap!

~*~ Miss Selfridge ~*~

As I currently have no cash to go shopping, I've decided to spend my time reviewing my favourite stores instead in an attempt to satisfy my urges (although I have a sneaky suspicion this method is not going to work...). Miss Selfridge is a store that, although not one of the first I visit when looking for a perfect outfit, one I am always pleasantly surprised by, and often leave wondering why I always walk past it.

~*~ What is it? ~*~

Miss Selfridge is part of the Arcadia group, which also owns stores such as Dorothy Perkins, Topshop and Evans. Miss Selfridge stocks clothes most similar to those of Topshop, but is aimed at a slightly younger target market (18-24 year olds, according to the Arcadia website), on more of a budget. Miss Selfridge is a high street store which aims to provide up to the minute fashion to young consumers at affordable prices. There are over 180 Miss Selfridge stores worldwide, which indicates its success.

~*~ The products ~*~

This store sells items you would expect to find in any standard fashion high-street store - jeans, skirts, tops, blouses, shorts, etc. Their range of jeans is good, the store offers a selection of different styles in lots of different cuts, fits, sizes and lengths, which is great when you are looking for that perfect pair of jeans.

This store has a good selection of vests and plain t-shirts in a variety of colours, actually I cant think of a colour they dont do, and are a good place for picking up holiday basics.

The shoe department is not something I ever find myself getting excited about in Miss Selfridge - I just find their footwear to be average, and overpriced for what you are getting. If I'm going to pay that much for a pair of shoes (about £40 for a pair of courts) I'd rather get them from a specialist shoe store such as Faith or Office.

Miss Selfridge does have a good lingerie range, and often have special offers on their underwear - at the moment they have 3 pairs of knickers for £9 (usually a fiver each) which is quite a good deal!

~*~ The prices ~*~

A pair of jeans from this store will set you back around £40, and a nice dress around £35 (although some go up to £55). A basic t-shirt or vest comes in around the £6 mark, with more detailed and fashionable tops up to £25 or more.

As I mentioned before, a pair of court shoes are around £40, flats £20-25.

As you can see the prices in this store are still towards the higher end of high street, even though the store has quite a young target market.

~*~ The verdict ~*~

Miss Selfridge is never going to be the first place I look when I begin my shopping trip. It does stock some nice items, and I have picked up a couple of gorgeous dresses there for a good price. However, it just doesn't have that luxurious feel to it, and I think that the store is a bit overpriced for what it offers and who it targets its products at. It's products also feel to me to be a bit like a cheap version of Topshops products, like the same product just without that special detailing that gives it it's magic... but that may just be me.

Not a bad store, but if I had £100 to blow, I wouldn't choose this store to do it in!

Summary: Not a bad little store, but once again, doesn't beat Topshop!

It's funny how times change - when I was young Miss Selfridge was far more desirable and trendy than Top Shop, and the quality was superior too! Now it seems to live in Top Shop's shadow.
