Advantages: Nursing room

Disadvantages: Expensive

Over the last couple of years I have either been pregnant or had young babies so I have paid my fair share of visits to Mothercare.

What is it and what do they sell?
For those of you that don't know Mothercare is a retail outlet that provides everything you need for a baby. You can pick up a pram, car seat, moses basket, baby clothes, a potty, breast pump and much more all in one shop.

My experience.
When I was pregnant with Noah and I had to buy all things baby, the first place I thought to visit was ofcourse Mothercare. I really wanted a Moses basket and a huge list of other things so I went to my local store with my mum. I also needed to get measured for a maternity bra.

The woman that measured me was very polite and helped me with the fitting of my bra but when she told me I was going to have to fork out just under twenty quid for one, my jaw dropped to the ground. Luckily I have a nice mum who insisted on paying it for me! We continued our little tour around the shop and I had a little sift through the maternity range that they had out. It was very well presented but there wasn't a huge amount of clothing on the rails. Again I looked at the price tags and decided I'd nip up the road to Peacocks and check out their maternity range instead because I was sure it would be a lot cheaper. I had a quick look around the prams and moses baskets but they were charging extortionate prices that wasn't any better quality than something I could pick up at ToyRus. Needless to say I didn't buy any of my baby items from there.

After Noah was born we went back to exchange a piece of clothing because we really hated it. They were really happy to let us choose something else and I think it helped that my hubby's mate worked behind the checkout.

Since my two have been around I have been in the shop with a double buggy. Now I may have mentioned before that my double buggy is one of the smallest on the market, it's not much bigger than a single and is a tandem style. I was appaled to find that I really struggled to move in and around the shop successfully without knocking just about everything off the rails. It drove me mad to think that this shop is suppose to be for babies and children yet everything is so tightly packed that prams struggle to get around in there.

I did end up buying some little Avent weaning pots from there once but tats about it. If I hadn't desparately needed them I could have probably picked them up cheaper elsewhere.

The one good thing about the place is they have a nursing room for the mums who breastfeed but I'm not particularly bothered about that because I'm happy to whip me boob out anywhere.

Verdict.
As you have proabaly already guessed I'm not too impressed with the shop. Considering they have been going for years and it's the first pace that most people think of when it comes to babies, I think they are over priced and definately not as good as they used to be. I would tell people to try other places like ToyRus before I recommended this place.

Summary: I wouldn't recommend them.

I know what you mean - when I was pregnant with my son, I went to Mothercare with the intention of buying everything, until I saw the price. I then went next door and raided 'Babys'r'us'. Much better value for money. Great review. Carol x

I agree. Mothercare is really expensive - John Lewis baby stuff is actually cheaper and the service better.
