Advantages: Good, clean clothes, some designer labels
Disadvantages: Books & music are too highly priced
Since moving to Brighton I have found an amazing range of secondhand charity shops. One of my favourites is Oxfam because of the large range of good quality clothes and books on offer. The Western Road, Brighton, branch has some brilliant clothes with labels like Next,Gap,Dorothy Perkins and Calvin Klein. I was thrilled this winter to buy a Calvin Klein evening cardigan for only £6.99 and a long black Richard's coat for £25.00 which is almost new. The books in the Western Road branch are in good condition but far too expensive. I mean it is supposed to be a charity shop and has become far to commercialised in recent years. Records & CD's are also far to highly priced and you can sometimes buy CD's new in the sales for the same price. Saying all of the above it is costly for shops to rent premises in the centre of Brighton, so I guess they have to meet their overheads. Well worth a visit when shopping in the town centre and many new items appearing each day.

- 01/12/00 I have used charity shops for a number of years now, for a variety of items, books, clothes recordes etc. I always buy my sond books from charity shops, as he is only 2 and doesnt understand hes not to draw on them etc. I think that the quality of the stuff for sale is rising evermore, as you say, there is a lot of designer name gear in there for a knockdown price. So you get a good bargain and the money spent hopefully helps out someone who needs it. |
