Advantages: Good Size Ranges, Low Prices, Some Bits Are Decent
Disadvantages: Some Bits Aren't So Decent, Staff Not Very Well Informed
As a general rule, I like to go for quality over price but I've been really pleased with the quality of Peacocks clothes given the low prices. It wasn't a store I immediately wanted to visit when it opened up in our town a few years ago but the Mrs dragged me in there a few times and I was forced to admit I'd been a bit of a snob initially!
They sell clothes for all ages, shapes and sizes, as well as both male and female, which I think is important these days. My daughter was quite a big girl when she had the grandson and found it very upsetting having to buy size 18 clothes - especially as it meant she could no longer wear anything from Top Shop. But the Mrs steered her into Peacocks where she found loads of nice things in her size. Also, with the prices being so low (typically £3 - £6 for a top) we found we could afford to buy the daughter a whole new wardrobe for about £140. We even sold those clothes on when the daughter lost her baby weight and got £50 back on ebay! Bargain. My daughter still shops there even now she's back in her size 12 and 14 clothes because of the great prices (and a bit of loyalty too I think).
For us blokes, they do all the basics mainly. I notice they're quite big on fashion for women and girls but the blokes stuff tends to be quite plain. The prices are brilliant though and I just bought a twin pack of tee-shirts from there last week for £5. Okay, I wouldn't wear them on a night out but they're fine for going to the shops in or pottering around the house. They're a bit on the thin side I must admit but for the price you can't really argue.
They do quite good undies in there, also for good prices and the sweaters are another good pottering-around-buy. I'm not keen on the shirts though I have to admit. They charge around £7 - £12 each for their shirts but I don't think the quality makes them worth it. I had one from Peacocks and it shrunk gradually in the wash until I couldn't wear it after just five or six washes because it looked silly (too tight). The men's sizes are reasonable like the ladies are. You can from an S up to XXL in most of their clothes.
Finally, they also sell kiddy clothes for both boys and girls. I'm not so keen on these though as they're actually not as cheap as other places. My daughter gets my grandson's vests from Asda for five for £5 but in Peacocks they want £5 for 3. And they look very thin and cheap to be honest. Some of the little tee shirts and trousers look okay but again, the prices aren't actually that cheap.
From a shop point of view they do okay I think. The staff are helpful to a point though I can't help but suspect that they're low-paid workers who don't really want to be there. It's not too important though as they tend to have everything out on the racks and you only really need to speak to a member of staff when you buy things. The one time I have spoken to a member of staff for something other than paying, they at least had the decency to shrug in earnest and try to appear helpful even though they weren't!
I think this is a three and a half star shop really so I've gone for four stars. Some of the stuff is a bit cheap and nasty but other bits are really good bargain buys. I also like the way they allow women to be women in the sizing stakes because there's nothing worse than seeing your daughter or your Mrs in tears just because they're a tiny bit chubby and suddenly made to feel like a giant porker by the big name shops who only want Kate Moss wearing their clothes. I think this is a very good store for low priced women's fashion and a decent store for men's basics. It'll never be first choice but I'll always be happy to stop by.
Summary: A three and a half star bargain shop I think

anonymili - 12.05.08 We have one nearby and I must admit I did like the glitzy stuff they had in over the Christmas period - great for parties and the like and easy to wear just once and not worry about it costing a bomb! I do like the look of their shoe selection too although the quality isn't too good! |
