Advantages: Lots of choice, animals look well looked after
Disadvantages: Bit expensive
Pets At Home is a nationwide pet shop chain; they sell a range of pet food, accessories and some animals. Our local Pets At Home has recently relocated to the other end of the retail park and now has a new grooming parlour which we haven't used as we found it quite expensive, it was around £35 for one dog, we usually only pay around £25 so a big difference, especially when you have two dogs. It also has a vets, we haven't used this either as we're with a local independent surgery.
The store itself is large and brightly lit; the tills are at the front of the shop with the grooming parlour and vets at the back. The shop always seems clean and tidy; you don't often see things lying around that shouldn't be. Pets are obviously allowed in the store, so sometimes it can be a bit noisy with dogs barking and such.
They sell some animals such as rabbits, mice, hamsters and guinea pigs. They also sell a wide range of fish and some reptiles. Although I always think the fish look overcrowded in places like this, I actually know naff all about fish, so they might be quite happy. The tanks are always clean and have decorative items in with the fish so they have things to "play" with (see what I mean, I know NOTHING about fish!) The other animals generally look well looked after and happy enough. We bought a hamster from here a couple of years ago and I recall the staff being very helpful, they gave us advice on how to handle and care for her and handled the hamster with care when popping her in the travel box, which was only made out of thin cardboard, which she nearly escaped out of. But then that hamster could escape out of anything, she was like a magician or something!
We shop at Pets At Home occasionally, usually for birthday and Christmas gifts for our two dogs. We do find them a bit expensive but they have the best range available in our area and my husband loves looking at the animals (I do not, it is boring)
They always have a bowl of water for the dogs near the door and a bowl of dog treats on the counter, which I think is a nice touch.
The staff always seem quite pleasant but aside from when buying our hamster, I haven't had much interaction with them except for when paying for our purchases.
Personally if I can, I would choose to buy pet food and accessories from our local market and support local businesses but I can't always get there, so Pets At Home would be my next choice.
Their website is very good, full of useful information about different animals and you can of course purchase things online.
