Advantages: Some bargains to be had

Disadvantages: Some stuff is poor quality, some items are cheaper elsewhere, stores badly laid out

Whenever I walk past a Poundland I always have to go in. Everything in there costs only a pound, so there must be some amazing bargains, right? Sadly, this is generally not the case, but it is a good shop to check out occasionally as you never know what you might pick up.

The best thing about Poundland is that you don't have to bother checking the prices of anything, and you'll never check a label and be disappointed because something is too expensive!

Poundland sells a huge variety of stuff. You will usually find a lot of sweets, biscuits and chocolate products. There are also quite a lot of toilettries such as toothpaste, soaps, and sometimes perfumes. They also sell a few dvds, a very small selection of books, some kitchenware and hardware, some toys, hair accessories, and at this time of year, Christmas decorations.

Some of these products are good value and some can be bought cheaper in supermarkets. I would advise caution before thinking everything is a good deal, and make sure you check out prices at Tesco and Asda (or better yet, take your normal supermarket receipt into Poundland if you're not too embarrassed, and work out what is cheaper!).

I would also make sure you check best before dates on food items, and have a look for dents or chips or scratches before buying other products.

I went into a Poundland in Eastbourne a couple of days ago and was quite unimpressed with most of the stock, but they did have a few nice books, including the hardback version of Gary Barlow's autobiography and also a lovely official guide to the TV programme Spooks. I purchased the latter which had an RRP of £12.99, and I'm really pleased with it.

I would recommend it as a place to nip into and pick up one or two bargains, but just remember that not everything is worth buying.

Summary: Can yield an occasional gem

I had a few bargains on Christmas Eve - Bratz and In The Night Garden 2009 annuals (rrp. £5.99), Hannah Montana toiletries (rrp. £5.99) and a Buffy the Vampire official guide (£9.99).

It's a great shop when they have the bargains but as you say the thing is a lot of their products are cheaper elsewhere.

I have to admit to popping as well when I'm passing.
