Advantages: Some bargain
Disadvantages: Some Non-Bargains
Poundland.....
Since the recent demise of Woolworth's, towns on the Isle of Wight have been left with many empty stores. In the town of Newport, north of the island, half of the old Wollies has been replaced by "Poundland".
This is the first store from this chain that has opened up on the island and I can honestly say that I never been into one of these stores anywhere before in my life. The store in Newport has now been open a good few months and it was a hive of activity every time I had driven past so I thought it about time we went and had a look.
This really seems the perfect store to opened in this current climate as it seems everyone is out for a good bargain or too. However when browsing the store I really didn't see too much that I thought was a really good bargain.
The store itself is a good size however was taken over with, in my opinion, far too much Halloween bit and bobs and not enough everyday items. There were so many people in when I went and things were beings moved about all over the place so I felt this made the store seems untidy and a bit dirty looking.
I also thought that were a lot of items that you could definitely get cheaper elsewhere. My other half needed some cheap shaving foam and I assumed for a £1 you might be able to get a named brand. This wasn't the case however and he ended up getting some foam that I am sure I could of got cheaper in Morrisons or another supermarket.
The range of items in the store was fairly wide as there were all the usual toiletries, toys, kitchen equipment, books and stationary. They also sell food which again may seem like a bargain but in most cases wasn't really. They were selling multi packets of 9 Wotsits for £1 but these were also in Morrisons this week for £1 for 12 bags.
I did however pick up some carpet cleaner (Vanish), a book, postal brown paper and of course the shaving foam. I think the few bits I got were good value but all I would say is that you have to be wise when shopping in this store. There are some things that truly are not good value for money.
The store was generally okay but not somewhere I would go out of my way to go to. I have pretty much mixed feelings about it but I do think that it is quite a good replacement store for Woolworth's although will never be a better store.
I think a 3 star rating is just about right for this store.
I do hope this has been of some help/interest to you.
Many thanks for taking the time to read.
Summary: A mediocre store

- 10/10/09 Oh the one in Edinburgh is fab (city centre). I couldn't live without it - so handy to get cheap stationery for school! |

- 09/10/09 We have several in Derby of a similar ilk - 99p store, everything's a £ and poundland - they are sprouting up everywhere . some good bargains in some like name brand make up at £ instead of £10+ but you do have to watch and be aware as some things are more expensive. |
