Advantages: Cheap clothing, good quality, makes M&S and C&A look very expensive, not everyone is bothered about having GAP or Armani on their gear
Disadvantages: Limited range, some want to have GAP on their clothes, not very trendy to mention down the wine bar
Here in jolly old Reading, Primark moved into the old store once occupied by the Co-op about a year ago and boy have they put some noses out of joint. I understand that they are an Irish company. Our store is very much laid out like a Marks and Sparks – wooden floor, and a combination of racks and shelves piled high with clothes. The shop front is wide as well – it oozes quality and tempts you through the door. Once inside, a number of things hit you. The size of the place –its big. The range of clothes – not as much as the big boys. But most importantly – price. Many opinions have been written about how good value Primark is for children’s clothes. We went there last week and came away with twice as many clothes as most things are half the price of say Adams. The prices are equally good for the male shopper. Last week, I purchased 2 men’s work shirts – well-cut – interesting colours – for £5 each – bargain! I have also purchased men’s silk ties there in the past for the same price. Even my Wife got in on the act. She wanted a fleece and bought a men’s version for £12. I have to admit, the range isn’t always that wide; and the colours do not set the pulse racing. But at the prices they charge – who really cares. It’s a great place for the money conscious or those who like a bargain. The queues can also get quite long with shoppers purchasing items by the handful – presumably bargain hunters too!! The biggest losers are the established stores. Marks and Spencer used to be there at the top. It could do no wrong. Its now been knocked off its perch by these ‘bargain’ stores and really is finding life difficult. To that I say shame! Now when am I going back to Primark to blow another £20 on 4 men’s shirts – I can’t wait.
