Advantages: Cheap clothing, accessories and homeware

Disadvantages: Allegations of slave labour and low quality goods

Primark is a great shop in many ways- it was the favourite before the credit crunch hit and now its become an essential place to shop, attracting more fans than ever before.

I love it and often go to London's Oxford Street store. It's HUGE in there but the trouble is, its always completely packed out! The queues are ridiculously long and people go mad in there, dragging around two big shopping baskets full of clothes and accessories. They also tend to spend A LOT of money in one transaction with the bill often reaching the hundreds.

One of the great things about Primark, in addition to the low price, is the range of clothing. If you want a basic T-shirt, they'll have it a choice of colours with a knock-down price tag. If you want a knock-off version of the Armani jacket you saw on David Beckam they'll probably have that too- and it'll probably look nearly identical and be a quarter of the price! This technique of copying the big catwalk designers is fairly common with most high street outlets but with Primark you get a great price tag to go with your knock off version!

I love it when things are reduced in Primark- yes they do reduce their already low prices- I picked up a wide belt with a metal buckle for the grand price of £1- reduced from £4- bargain!

My experience of the shoes are that they're pretty rubbish quality. The poor quality of Primark overall is probably more noticeable in the shoes because shoes are a hard-working item and if they only last 3 months then you know it's pants! But then if you pay £2 (as I did for a pair some months ago and they're on their last legs now) then you know the old adage= you get what you pay for!

I do wonder about the slave labour issues that the press have highlighted- I feel awful thinking I might be contributing to people working in awful conditions. But Primark responded to allegations by saying they would ensure everything was sourced ethically and this was a while ago. I checked their website recently and it said they have taken steps already so im still shopping there

Summary: Exactly what skint shoppers needed....

"...what would be slave wages in this country would be a kings ransom..." that is so true and i know a bit about it too. I think working conditions tend to be the worst thing, rather than salary in itself. we need to be fair though...thats what fair trade is all about!

I love the title! My purse loves Primark.
I have a different take on the slave labour. For many years as I was growing up, I used to live in Africa. Sometimes I would go to work with my dad and we would pass great queues of grown men on the way. When I asked what they were waiting for he'd say "a days work". I would see little kids about 4 years old manning market stalls and carrying great baskets of wares on their heads. They didn't do it for the fun of it, they did it because it was the difference between eating or not. I also know that what would be slave wages in this country would be a kings ransom in some third world countries. So whilst I don't condone the exploitation of people abroad , I do know that the situation is more complex than it seems
