There can be few reading this who have never heard of the clothing chain Primark. Primark now has 188 stores across Europe with 34 in Ireland, 125 in the U.K plus a handful in Europe, so chances are there will be one near you! Primark sells fashionable clothing and accessories for men, women and children at very low prices. In addition it also sells home wares, cosmetics and lingerie.
All the Primark stores I have visited seem to have a similar layout and all bear a resemblance to a jumble sale. There seems to be little logic to how items are displayed in my local Metro centre store. Women's clothing is spread out all over the store. There are seldom any staff members on hand to help look for sizes either. In their defense it must be a near impossible task to keep any sense of order when the store is always busy.
The main reason Primark is so popular has to be the low prices. Most of its clothing sells at a fraction of other high street retailers, an important consideration in these difficult times. Last week I spotted a very attractive belt on sale for under £3. I also bought a basic vest type t-shirt for under £2. Primark also has a range of women's shoes. My friend bought a pair of imitation Ugg boots for around £5!
Primark also sells children's clothes from birth up to 13 years. I can recommend the brushed cotton jogging bottoms. These are really thick and wash and wear well. The best thing is that they cost just £2 for aged 6-7 years! I recently bought a boys aged 7 t-shirt with a snake logo for just £3! Primark also sell children's socks and pyjamas and again these have been a good buy.
The men's section caters for all ages and sizes. T-shirts are a good buy with most being 100% cotton and of reasonable quality. Primark also sells men's shoes and socks.
So what do I think of Primark? Well I have very mixed feelings. The first problem for me is their poor record for ethical standards. Primark have been exposed by the press on several occasions for using suppliers who have been guilty of paying very low wages, having appalling working conditions and worst of all using child labour. Primark say they have high standards and have now sacked the suppliers in question. But I still have concerns. After all if something seems too good to be true such as very low prices then it probably is!
My second problem is to do with quality. Some items are fairly well made but others are very poorly made, with seams coming apart for example. You really do need to check any item well before you buy!
I also hate the crowds in Primark It doesn't seem to matter what time of day I visit it is always the same! It can be difficult to get to the rails and stands.
I am not too keen on the changing rooms either. Again there is usually a queue to try anything on. Unlike some of the more up market stores you will not find anyone offering to get extra sizes for you in Primark!

- 17/08/09 I am a recent convert to Primark but I agree with you, I feel a little uneasy about the ethics osf their sweatshop production and the place is always crowded! |

- 17/08/09 I always avoid the changing rooms too. Their pyjamas are brilliant, £5 and fully lined! I also bought a lovely chunky bangle last time I was there for £2! |
