Princes Square is a small intimate shopping centre in the pedestrian Buchanan Street precinct. The centre hosts a list of designer names including Karen Millen, Jo Malone and Reiss offering an array of beautiful items. However, you don't need to shop to visit the Square, there is a good selection of restaurants and bars - something to suit most people. At the weekend its a great place just for people watching! But it becomes a truly magical place at Christmas, when a massive central Christmas tree is erected, and carol concerts take place in the courtyard. Princes Square, within Buchanan St, Glasgow's main shopping fareway, is a shopping centre with a difference. The building dates from 1841, when it was a Merchant square. When the building was converted in the 1980's the architects carefully worked their design around many of the original features, such as the yellow sandstone walls. To give more height, the basement was excavated to house more retail space. A clear glass dome was added over the whole building to bring in more light. While writing an opinion, about an event taking place in Glasgow this weekend, I was reminded of this early opinion on Princes Square, one of the numerous Shopping Centres’ in Glasgow. When I looked at the date I originally wrote it I decided it was about time I brought the whole opinion up to date while also attempting to improve it just a little in the process. First I’d like to get ‘the dry stuff’ out of the way by telling you that the centre is open on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30 in the morning till 6 o’clock at night, while on Thursdays these hours are extended to 9.30 am till 8.00 pm.
