Advantages: cheap, very cheap

Disadvantages: very small

As you all know, I just love a bargain and I just adore hunting for bargains. Visit any car boot sale, charity shop or discount store and chances are at one time or another that I`ve blessed it with my presence.

On my everlasting quest for all things cheap I happened across a little store in Northampton called Rock Bottom. I think the name alone tells you that this shop is a pennypinchers dream come true. Now this store is no Harrods or Tescos but at the prices they charge I don`t really care about presentation or brands that I recognise.

On entering you will notice that it looks like most of the multitude of pound shops that are dotted around the globe, but this store isn`t a pound shop. The aisles are very, very small, so if you have a child in a buggy then it`s recommended that you leave them at home for an easier shopping experience.

As I said, even though it looks like one, this is not a pound shop, but nonetheless the price stickers are very pleasing on the eye. You can`t fail to be amazed by the vast range of products that they sell, if there`s something that you need then chances are good that they will stock it.

Items available range from car stereos, lighting, deep fat fryers, telephones, kettles, crockery, cutlery down to the even cheaper stock like sweets, food sauces, bottled drinks, nappies, deodorant and other bathroom supplies. Then you`ve got the children`s aisle which has a wide selection of toys, pens, pencils, colouring books, selotape, staplers and other stationery equipment.

Then there`s your DIY section, admitedly not as big as B&Q but there is a wide selection and the prices are much cheaper. Here you`ll find plugs, sockets, aerial leads, extension leads, brackets, paint brushes, screwdrivers and even compost.

Although it doesn`t look big enough, there`s even an upstairs section. This is where they stock adult and childrens clothes, underwear, lamp shades, quilt covers, sheets, towels, cu
rtains and even curtain poles.

Sounds very much like a minature version of Argos doesn`t it? The difference being that everything is much cheaper than Argos.

Here is also where I fuel my collection of novelty lighters. These are all held on the counter, and at only £1 each they do sell out very quickly but they are rapidly replaced by a totally different selection. Also along the counter you`ll find electric razors, hairdryers, blank videos, cds, cigarette papers and filters, batteries and even cameras.

To give you an example of price, I buy my rizlas and filters here for £1.60, at the supermarket it costs me £3.00 for the same amount. A big bottle of orange will set you back £1, the same size bottle at Tesco`s is £1.79. I also purchased my new deep fat fryer for £39, the exact same model in Argos would have cost me £84.50, now that is a bargain, and the quality can`t be complained about either because mine is still going strong and I`ve never had to return anything else either.

How on earth they fit everthing in the shop is beyond me, the ground floor doesn`t look that much bigger than my living room, but almost every spare inch is jam packed. If you`ve bought something heavy then the staff will also help you to carry it to your car, so the service can`t be complained about either.

I don`t know if this is just a one off shop or whether it`s global, so if anyone has seen a Rock Bottom store anywhere else then can you let me know.

Being the greates bargain hunter of all time I was very interested in this op. I have never heard of Rock Bottom before - I doo hope it is a chain - It might cost me too much to travel from Southampton to Northampton to save a few bob although it's the kind of stupid thing I'd doo! Heather
