Advantages: selected bargains

Disadvantages: generally overpriced, run out ofstock

I have been a regular shooper at Safeway for the last 8 years. Generally, I have always thought that they are a little overpriced but there stores were in a convenient location for me so I didn't mind paying that little bit extra.

However, in the last couple of years, Safewya have locally taken on amore aggressive approach to marketing. They have 6-8 unmissable bargains every week and a flyer showing these is delivered to local homes. Now you'd think I'd be pleased about this wouldn't you!

What this means to me is that every week, I go to the shop, unaware of the special offers because my home is not deigned to be near enough to be worthy of a flyer (its about a mile and I often walk there and back with my son). When I get there there loads of people are wandering around with their flyers picking up the special offers and nothing else. I normally find that at least two of the things that I would normally buy are out of stock because they've been on offer.

I have questoined Customer Services at the store about why they do not get sufficient stock in to meet demand but they never have an answer. We all know the real reason, they like to lure people in and hope that they'll not notice what they want is not available and that they'll buy somethig else at the regular overinflated proce.

If you want to go for this ..more fool you. I'm going to go to Safeway, buy the special offers and get the rest of my shopping at Tesco.

Unfortunately it is impossible for us to predict demand. For example, we sold 5 pallets of suitcases yesterday, thats 75 suitcases in one day! Sometimes there are problems with delivery curfews as well at some stores but the main problem is usually unexpected demand.

I would also like to note that it is in our best interests to have these offers in stock, after all it is very damaging to our reputation if we dont. In fact, in my store it is common for every member of replenishment staff just to be put on promotions plus all the managers just to keep the shelves full. I think people dont realise how many of these items we actually sell!

It really drives you crazy, doesn't it! I go shopping at odd times in the hope of avoiding the 'specials' bargain shoppers! Good op. Sue

Several supermarkets seem to be doing special offers in this way. A friend was telling me about Lidel special offers, seemingly they are mostly sold out within minutes on a Thursday morning. I'll stick to one of the 'big' supermarkets I think - Kay
